All of the 783s were released with a version of the long stack motor.  Their performance is variable for a number of reasons.  The motors are noisy due to some issues which were corrected a couple of years later in the 784 and 785.  Another cause of poor operation is the magnetraction magnets rubbing on the back side of the driving wheels.  Check for this before spending big bucks on a replacement motor.

If you want to swap a vintage postwar motor into a 783, you'll need to pull the universal joint coupler with pins that connects the motor shaft to the worm shaft, and press it onto the shaft of the vintage long stack motor.  If you've never done this before, be careful, or you might ruin a historic $250 motor.  Good luck with your project!
