Hello,

Picked up an MTH Railking #5405 - Hudson 30-1025? not sure of the part number.

Looks like the motor worm and brass gear are stripped, it jumps teeth when I run it.

Also need traction tires..20241030_165257

Would anyone know where I can get a Parts list and replacement parts ?

Thx in advance,

Andy

That engine should be 30-1121-1.  DF-1200001 Chassis Not available, nor the BE-0000005 Motor.  Chances are the gear axle gear is the issue and Motor worm is ok.  So doing a gear swap should work.

The other option is to machine down the motor mount bracket so worm drops and meshs with axle gear better. G

The fellas are quite right. You need to clean out the gear well and see what’s going on. Look at axle gear for any obvious signs of damage/stripped teeth. Also check motor mount screws to see if they’re loose. If all looks good, and you still have a misalignment, the frame can be milled to achieve good gear engagement. If unsure, clean out old grease, and post up close up pictures of the axle gear. We’ll take a look…

Sorry that I'm late to this thread.  GGG knows a lot more about reparing trains than I do, but I don't personally agree with the suggestion of altering the motor mount.  If the steel worm on the motor is worn down (and I think I can see that a couple of threads are in the very center), then IMO it's time for new.

A lot of the EARLY RailKing locos possibly used the same motor and worm gear.  So if you can't get the part directly from MTH, save some searches on the 'Bay and maybe you can score a parts donor loco for a reasonable cost.

One thought about @Darrell's comment... sometime after 2015 or so, MTH changed the gear ratio of their RailKing 6-drivered steam locos.  This change is NOT reflected in the inventory on the MTH Parts and Sales website!  I mentioned it to Rich Foster at York a couple of years ago, and he claimed not to be aware of any production change.  But two different ratios are reflected in the PS2 "personality" files that determine the timing of chuffs, and I've personally verified that there are two different ratios.  My point is that if the motor they are selling has a worm gear cut to mesh with the later worm wheel, I'm not surprised that it didn't work properly in one of the earlier models.

here's some pics I took with my microscope.

Worm gear is definitely thin on some threads.... drive gear is scarred, not sure if it would be OK, but how to find a BE-0000005 Motor or

something that will work ?

It’ll go again Andy, file the top of the gear box, or have it milled till you get good engagement, ….I wouldn’t sweat that worm gear or the worm wheel,….

I agree motor worm looks fine.  Pat is that gear standard on the chassis?  You can have a wheel pulled and new gear pressed on.  Have to remove the blind center wheel first.  Then make sure clocked correctly when reinstalled.  G

It’s standard for that type of frame ie; worm gear integral to motor. ….there is another variant with divorced worm shaft, and dog bone coupling like Premier steam. However, in the close up pics presented, I see no cupping on the toes of the worm wheel, in fact, it actually looks almost pristine, with no knife edging on the toes either,….seems I recall a batch of these were known for engagement issues that I believe you already pointed out previously,…..if he sends it to you for repair George, I know a guy with a mill,…..his name is Pete!…😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I hope everybody realizes there is a master motor chart we put together about 3 years ago, available in the helpful stuff pages. It includes the "factory" dimensions/specifications for the worm gear, and its exact spacing on the motor shaft, the type of motor used, etc. This document pretty much tells you what engines use the same motors and the specs about the motor / worm gear, key measurements, etc.

Railking Steam Motor chart

Railking Diesel Motor Chart

Premier Diesel Motor Chart

For Premier Steam, it uses either a 9434 (long) or a 9432 (short Pittman motor in 98.9% of applications, all coupled to dog bones.....

Our hope is that you can reference other part numbers from different generations of electronic packages to have a wider variety of parts to choose from.

Thank you,
Mike
