Looking for a replacement headlight bulb for MTH K-4.

I had a similar problem with a different engine and was able to buy from fleabay some miniature dolls house bulbs that did the job.

This probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but if it were my K4, I'd replace the bulb with an LED from Evans Designs.

I have both options for you at home. I have the Evans setup which would be my choice but as well I also have some wheat bulbs. Call me tonight and we can get together and repair your engine.

If Alex doesn't have the right bulb, contact me. It should be a small 18 volt grain of wheat.

One of my fellow club members (actually, Wyatt above) is also suggesting using an Evan Design LED as the replacement. If Alex doesn't have the right one, that may be the only option.

I have this bulb, the only difference is the last number is a 1 instead of a 2

will this work for you. If not can you take a picture of your bad bulb, maybe i can match it up with the others I have.

That should be a 12-14 volt bulb, it's run from track power with those locomotives.

 

I believe the T 1-3/4 bulb is the size, how about this one?

To find out what size it is, measure the diameter of the glass, each digit in the T number is 1/8".  So, a T 1-3/4 bulb should be about .1875" in diameter.  That's the diameter I measure on one I have here for the MTH.

The correct bulb is a small dome GOW 18 volts. A standard GOW will not fit in the headlight housing. The marker light illumination uses a small screw in bulb, the same other railking steam locos.

Chuck is correct, the bulb is inside the loco shell, the CA-0230001 is an 18volt bulb that illuminates the marker lights only. I will look and see if I have the small GOW bulb, I think I have one from a board set I bought from a forum member, who sent a lot of items with the boards, which was very nice of him.

I have attached a photo of the bulb.  It is about the size of a grain of wheat bulb as it must pass through the boiler front to enter the rear of the headlight housing.

Just a suggestion,

 

Why not use a LED 18 volt Pico, Nano, or Chip from Evan's designs. It's brighter and will last forever.

It's actually a great idea, I should have suggested that.  I've used 3mm LED's in those headlights, I just file the rear flange down so the LED will slide in.  A resistor and a diode, and you have your headlight.  As Alex says, it'll be the last light you ever have to put in there.

Thanks for all the responses guys!  LED it will be!  Wyatt (wmwalker from above) and I are going to get together this weekend as he has the right size LED.  It may cost me a beverage or two but, I might even be able to schmooze him into doing the work.
