All,

I picked up a 2001 vintage PS2.0 Pennsylvania Consolidation H10, item 20-3055-1.  it has a few issues I was hoping to get some help diagnosing.

The engine has time on it, but is recognized by DCS easily, runs in all directions, responds to all commands, activates sounds and turns on smoke unit properly.  Smoke unit provides smoke, all lights function.  Note - I have installed a BCR in the tender as the existing MTH NiCad was dead and having a hard time taking a charge.

There are 2 issues I am trying to diagnose:

1 - With the engine at maximum volume (by DCS Vol + and pot turned all the way up), the sounds are still quite low (no, I am not deaf from playing with trains - LOL).  If I adjust the vol + vol - or volume pot the sounds do raise or lower, but the sounds are different levels of low (quiet).  To note there may be a slight distortion to the speaker.  Question, is the problem in the speaker, volume pot (still raises and lowers sound), or somewhere else?

2 - Front headlight and marker lights work fine with smoke unit off.  When I turn the smoke unit on, it does smoke, but it sounds like scraping and the marker lights turn off and the front light flickers a bit then turns off.  When I turn the smoke unit off, the lights come back on.  Where do I look to diagnose this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help.

G,

Metal is flaking off of the speaker, you are probably correct there.  Is it easiest to order a replacement speaker from MTH direct, or is there another source?  What would have happened to the MUX board that caused the issue?  What is special about turning on the smoke unit that causes the marker lights to go out and then the the front headlamp to flicker briefly and then go out?  Can you show me a pic of the MUX board you are referring to?  Is it best to fix the MUX board or get a new one?  How detailed is the mod?  And lastly, do you do MUX board fixes?

Thanks, Greg

I have speakers if you need it.  it is BF-0000033.  It was a design issue and the fan runs off 5V, like the MUX board.  I do the fixes, it involves mod to PS-2 5V board, changing Blue Ground wire to get better ground, and changes to MUX board resistors.   Complicated directions, that techs have.  G
