I know this is a crazy question, but I really like the sound of the MTH GP-38-2. Since I already have two of them, I took a chance and purchased a MTH GP-35 hoping it would have the same engine sounds, it did not; but still like the engine. Can anyone recommend an MTH engine that shares the same engine sounds a the MTH GP-38-2? Thanks!

Load the GP-38 sound file into the GP-35, problem solved.
Try an MTH GP30.

Any GP38/GP38-2 model should NOT sound like a GP30/GP35/GP40, since the GP 7/9, GP38 series EMD units are NOT TURBOCHARGED like the GP30/35/40 series units. The GP30/35/40 sound will have that typical "turbo whine" when compared to the older roots blower sound of the GP7/9/18/38 series units.
It's all well and good that the sound isn't prototypical, but if he likes the sound, it's his RR, and loading the GP-38 sound file will fix the issue.

I suppose, in his mind.
My son received a WBB GP-38 for his birthday. Only drawback is the sound system can I install a MTH sound system in it??

After you up-grade the model to the MTH DCS system, then yes.
I also love the sound on my MTH GP38-2.
Y'know, pointing out, upon a Forum designed for the exchange of info, opinions and suggestions, that something is un-prototypical, is more than entirely appropriate; indeed, it could be said that it is the -primary- reason that such a Forum exists.
The "it's his RR" stuff is patently obvious, and does no one any good. He may choose to give his GP35 the wrong sound, but it's still the Wrong Sound. Does he care? Dunno; not my call.
Are you kidding? I suspect he's pretty clear on the fact that it's non-prototypical simply because of the fact that the GP35 came with a different sound. I did actually point him to a solution to his query.
In point of fact, your post added absolutely nothing to the thread, what's your point here?

Just my opinion, but I believe that you made an ASSUMPTION that the original posted in fact was/is aware of the mechanical sound differences between an EMD turbocharged prime mover and the older roots blown prime mover. I have come to learn that many, many, many "toy train" folks, and even skilled model railroaders, do NOT really know the differences, simply because they don't have ANY interest in REAL TRAINS, nor REAL RAILROADING.
I don't remember which company it was, they use to have sound files online, so you can hear it before you buy. If I remember right they use to have a Burro crane with sounds added in a gondola in a video. Looked like a cool project to do. I have a Railsounds 2.5 board with SP SD40 chips, need to build something with it.
I'm still in the dark why it's such a big deal to you folks that he wants a different sound.

Well, you are the person that SEEMS to think, and comment, that it is a "big deal". I simply tried to point out that the REAL units sound COMPLETELY different, and WHY, just in case the original poster didn't know that.
I'm with John. These are toys and the guy asked a simple question to which he gave a simple answer. Figure out how prototypical you are when you need 110 feet to equal a mile of real railroad.
John
I didn't know that the engines sounded different on the various GP's here. I wasn't looking for this info, but I'm glad I learn which ones had turbo-charged.
I'm with Hot Water. This is a great learning opportunity for those of us who don't know, perhaps also for the OP.

I guess it depends on which command system you want to up-grade to, i.e Lionel TMCC or MTH DCS.
For Lionel TMCC, the only & best option is the Electric Railroad "Cruise Commander".
For the MTH DCS system, you will need to purchase a DCS 2.0 Up-Grade kit, and either have someone REALLY experienced & qualified do the installation for you, and they will install the correct sound file via. computer down load.
We can also install the incorrect sound file if you so desire.
For what it worth, I have a MTH Alaska GP-35, and while the sound quality is excellent, it does not have a turbo sound. This would be perfect correct sound for a GP-38.
