I've got 3 GP38-2s from MTH all with protosound 3.0, but one of them seems to have a much lower top speed then the other 2. At full power it probably goes about half as fast as my other two. It seems to run smoothly and all sounds and commands work fine.  I do not have DCS and run these engines in conventional mode. I thought maybe I locked the speed but I reset all factory defaults and I can't seem to figure it out. I also tested to see if one of the trucks was dead or having issues, but both seem to be operating fine.

Anyone have this problem before?

Matt, I might disagree. I don't fully know all about it. The only time I've seen where an engine is slow because of a tach problem, the engine would eventually stop and shut down. I think the board didn't like the results it got.

I'm not a tech and only have limited experience. I have seen slow engines for other reasons like dried grease, and binding/rubbing problems.

Has this engine been lubed properly? Checked for any binding? Etc.

Beyond those, I'd guess there's a speed limit set that isn't getting cleared for some reason. A tech may need to look at this beyond normal operator checks.

I did see this once on a used 1 gauge PS2 Dash 8 I bought. To speed up the story, it eventually fixed itself after servicing. I checked all that I could. I feel that the lube had dried and after I serviced it twice, it must have finally broke in and run correctly. I had oiled the axles twice for service searching for the issue. I did clean the flywheel twice with no immediate response.

The gentleman I bought the engine from had passed away shortly after. I think he had cancer, and I'm guessing he stopped running stuff and it just sat for a long time. I kept running the engine by itself and noticed on the third session that it finally picked up speed to match other trains running.

before when I got it (would drag in a consist at higher speeds so I ran it alone)

after noticing it speeding up some

Are these new or used?  All same model?  If used maybe one does not have a correct sound file, which effects speed profile.

Also without DCS you can not do a full Reset.  Maybe take to some one with DCS who can do a factory reset.  Then they could run it with your other two at the same set scale speed and see how they do.  G
