New old stock 6-18500 Milwaukee Road is on the way. I will need to oil and clean re-grease the gears. What is the best way to check and grease the gear area below the motor.

May have found my answer under the thread “Postwar Lionel GP-9 Maintenance”
This particular engine was released in 1987 and therefore would be considered 'Modern' rather than 'Post War.' Regardless, the maintenance info you have found is probably satisfactory but just in case you weren't aware of it (and for future reference), FYI the 'Service Information' for the this particular engine can be found on Lionel's website. To access it type 'Lionel Support', then click on (and hold) 'Resources' at the top left hand side of the page, and on the drop down list select 'Owner's Manuals' and when that page opens up type the item number (in this case 6-18500) into the space provided and the Manual will then come up on screen.
Here's a video from Lionel.
I would especially check the worm gear for grease Lionel used a white grease that would dry out and be sticky.
Thanks for all the help. Lionel was the first place I went. The manual only gives the lubrication points on the exposed parts of the trucks. My major concern is the worm gear/gear cluster area under the motor. What is the best way to remove the motor to gain access on 1987 post war crossover design like the 6-18500?

Follow the “Postwar Lionel GP-9 Maintenance” guidance. The manual, as you have seen, is lacking. There is just one screw from the bottom of the powered truck to remove the motor.
