Sounds like you have a cracked or slipped gear, which is a common problem for these. Search the archives. There are several discussions on how to fix them.
Someone located metal gears I believe, I'd like to get a set of those for mine before the problem.
i am not up to doing it myself unless it were absurdly simple.
I've taken the gearbox apart, it's not bad, but I doubt I'd classify it as absurdly simple.
You can buy gears from Stock Drive
Who is stock drive, do you have a link?
Stock Drive and Sterling Instruments have been making gears and other related products for a looooooong time. I am surprised you never ran across them.
John,
Even though I have an EE degree, I am basically a mechanical engineer. I started in ME in undergraduate school but changed to math for my undergraduate degree. My EE degree is a MS. The work I do spans the spectrum from analysis of dynamic systems to working with the NASTRAN guys to optimize structures to working with the EEs to design drive amplifiers for brushless DC motors. I also do most of my auto maintenance including rebuilding engines and transmissions. I have done a lot of software in the distant past, but in recent years I usually design the software and let an expert in C++ write the code.
I've never seen that company, but I don't routinely go looking for custom gears. Do they actually make a drop-in, or do you have to have a custom gear made?
It's been a long time since I had either an engine or transmission apart, though I have done that in the way back past.
