I'm sure someone who owns one will know for sure, but if you had the loco in front of you the "made in" is usually stamped on the bottom of the tender. I think Lionel locos were "American made" up until the late 90's, 1997 or so.
If it was made overseas, it would have been built in South Korea in that time-frame.

That Hudson was the first steam engine with tmcc and yes it was made in the USA. It was made in 1995.
Some boxes will say "guaranteed made and litho in U.S.A"
actually, I have the same question on behalf of Lionel GG1's. I've seen one on Ebay, description said that it was made in China.
Nothing against Chinese products or something the like, for me it's a kind of nostalgia, must be psychological I think, or symbolic, as Lionel for me is just such an icon of US toy train manufacturing. I know, it's bizarre as even US modern Lionel isn't the same as the 'original' any more.

In case you haven't noticed, nothing is the same as "original" anymore.

The Germans have a nice word for characters like me. They call it 'Weltfremd'.
My dictionary translates that in 'unwordly'

I'm the same way, all my trains are made in the U.S., it's just when I turn the train
over and see Made in the U.S. of America, it's just pride in ownership of days made here.
