Making an old time bridge with that left over wood

So the first thing I did was research pictures. Than I took cardboard and laid out my parameters... Length, Height, and Width are critical, that way I can build this on my "work bench" Here is the area were the bridge will cross to the fascia/front of the layout

I then came up with a basic frame work for the bridge. Most of wood came from left over kits (scenic express trestle kit) and other wood purchase from past.

I made the side frames from a quick sketch I made and the base just by connecting the two side frames.... use pictures here to guide you.

BTW I pre stained everything with mars black and burnt umber acrylics before I used the wood glue

So next were the wood planks. I used a 1 / 50th and 1/43 scale car and made the widths fit both.

Next was to add those bolt details, tension rods, joint plates, etc. I didn't do every joint but I wanted to get the feel of the details...

So here it is in place with a stick to determine the "under structure"

In my rural hometown one of those was always called the "Dry Bridge" by locals. It finally succumbed to concrete and steel during the 1960s. The "Mountain to Sea Rail Trail" in N.C. will pass under the bridge on the old A&Y roadbed.

5 or 6 years ago there was still one west of the Kate Shelley bridge west of Boone Ia., there was a significant hump to get onto bridge from the County road.

Very well done...it will look great once you get it in place and finish the details...beautiful layout!

Thanks guys and in case you are wondering none of this wood was used from the current La Belle kit

next I cut the underside beams.

I painted the bottom footing with concrete color paint and I was done.

This one went quick, and was fun to do...

Oh boy I wish... I am using a rail saw with fine teeth with a miter box... some times I am even know to gnaw at with my teeth
