The initial group of 4 A4 pacifics all had names containing the word 'Silver', the remainder of the class have a variety of naming conventions, but the majority of them are named after birds.
Sir Nigel Gresley, the man credited with the development of the A4, was an avid birding enthusiast, hence the naming of some of the locomotives in this manner.
