Not my style layout......but love it.......oh to visit it....
Wow, quite the difference from his calm presence on the TM video I watched a few years ago. I feel like I don't even know this guy now after watching this latest interview. Interesting man.
Did anyone notice or feel that Mandy has some of the traits or genius Robin Williams had?

Nice segment. I highly recommend the TM Celebrity Layout videos as well. The Mandy Patinkin video goes much deeper into the story and history behind his layout. Of all of my toy train videos, I've re-watched this TM series more than any other two combined.
Andy
My impression of Mandy was that of a very driven guy..who is racing against a clock based on his father's death. Model trains for him and as well as myself are sort of an oasis freed from this stuff.
Hey John,
Thanks for the heads up. Always enjoy 60 minutes and the segment on Mandy was quite entertaining.
Paul
That was an enjoyable interview. Interesting dude.

I just watched the DVR of 60 minutes and thought that it was a fun piece on Mandy Patinkin. I particularly liked when Mandy got Bob Simon to crawl on hands and knees to join him in the hatch - talk about a tight fit! He was bouncing around like a little kid. I had the same reaction as previous posters when I saw the trains go by - wow, they were moving really fast, just like Mandy talks. Train-wise, it was refreshing to see that he clearly enjoyed running his trains, and had added several personal touches on the layout that make it special for him. That's what it's all about.
I watched the interview online, since I missed it last night. He's an interesting guy. The layout appears to be heavily postwar. The "trolley" they discussed was a motorized Corgi PCC car, and they were running it backwards, so I hope the street was clear.
It was a nice supplement to the TM Video. Great exposure for our hobby.
I've read somewhere that Mandy Patinkin had someone else built that layout for him. I'm not sure how much he actually put into it himself physically.
K.C, Thanks for the clip.
Had the pleasure of meeting Mandy and selling him some postwar a number of years ago at York in the parking lot. A nice man.
The one cringe-worthy comment was when the host referred to it as an "electric Train set," what is this, the 1920s?
traits or genius Robin Williams had?
Traits or symptoms?
He dosen'nt seem any crazier than me.

Did I miss the support posts? The one thing I noticed was there didn't seem to be a way a layout that large didn't collapse with no load-bearing structure.
One of the better interviews involving famous people who love trains. Mandy's layout is still fantastic, and I'm glad he's also gotten roles again in TV.
I can see Mandy's also been still sticking to the 80's to late 90's Lionel equipment primarily for his layout, like the 1985 IC F-3 passenger set and the Century Club Berkshire.
It was either OGR or CTT, I forget which, did an article about him sometime around
when he starred in "Chicago Hope". That was some time ago, when the series was new.
Hoppy
BTW, has anybody on this forum equipped the underside of their layout with obvious permanent workshop type florescent tube lighting similar to what was shown on Mandy's layout?
At the Railroad Museum of Long Island under the Lionel Visitor Center layout the perimeter has work lights like that. Makes things a lot easier.
Good for Mandy Patinkin! Of course, hard rocker Rod Stewart has a layout and it was on the cover of Model Railroader. Also read in a biography of Frank Sinatra that he had a layout replicating his boyhood home of Hoboken, and would occupy the corner booth of a Palm Springs restaurant building kits with the restaurant owner. Merle Haggard grew up on the Santa Fe (his Dad was a Section Hand) in Bakersfield, and he had/has a collection of O Scale Santa Fe locomotives.
Here is a list of celebs and their model railroad interests: http://www.boldts.net/TrainsCelebs.shtml
Just watched it with the wife and my youngest.. My 8 year old 'Hey dad he sounds like Inigo Montoya' about a minute later the line from the movie and a jaw dropped.
Mandy at this age and playing Saul in homeland reminds me of one of my uncles who traveled between the US and Israel hmmm
I will have to pull out my TMBV Celebrities dvd.
I laughed when Mandy was crawling under the layout and said to the cameraman "come on under guys it's fun under here." Only us train nuts think that way.
“Homeland” actor Mandy Patinkin admitted to New York Times Magazine that, on the medical TV drama “Chicago Hope,” he was too big for his scrubby pants. “I struggled with letting in other people’s opinions,” he said. “I never let directors talk to me, because I was so spoiled. I started off with people like Milos Forman, Sidney Lumet, James Lapine, unbelievably gifted people. So there I was saying, ‘Don’t talk to me, I don’t want your opinion.’ I behaved abominably. I don’t care if my work was good or if I got an award for it. I’m not proud of how I was then, and it pained me.” [IMDb]
I watched the entire segment, and found it interesting.
I've read somewhere that Mandy Patinkin had someone else built that layout for him. I'm not sure how much he actually put into it himself physically.
If I remember the TM video correctly Rich from SMART built much of the layout with Mandy doing some of the work along the way. That celebrity series of videos by TM is excellent as is all their stuff.
Well, I just watched him get re-captured by some extremists a few days ago.
Oh, wait - that was Homeland. It was Saul. Whew!
Carrie, you are in BIG trouble!
I enjoyed both the 60 Minutes and Discovery clips.
Thanks guys for posting them.
