Does anyone know about this revolving beacon lantern? How does it work and is it worth the money? There are a few on ebay. I saw it in an antique store yesterday and the price was $100 but it was missing the beacon. I thought it was high and I was right.

Nick,
I've never seen, $100.00 price tag on one, Wow! I don't think so. IMHO..Shop around for another if you're mindset on MARX. There are many Lionel 494's out there with the beacon at a more affordable amount. There are newer more dependable rotating beacon accessories on the market. Again this is, IMHO
No way, $35.00 with beacon top is about average. $100.00? no no no.
Antique shops, for me, have often had delusions of grandeur for items, such as toys,
that they know nothing about. (conversely, I know zip about old furniture, china, or
glassware). Definitely caveat emptor when you shop in one. Know the real value or
keep walking....but..that applies to anything you buy, which means homework.
Thanks for all the feedback regarding the price which I thought was extremely high. How about the beacon light itself. Is it a dependable one and does it function properly? Is it worth even $20-$30 or as someone suggested, the Lionel 494? Let me know.
The odds of getting either the Marx or the Lionel hot air type searchlights to work well is slim. Takes hours of fiddling around with vanes to get one sorta working and as soon as you move it to another spot, the trial and error starts all over. They look cool, but are a wast of time in my opinion. Try and find a K-Line or RMT version with a motor. Those are worth the money spent.

Nick,
I'm the one who suggested Lionel 494. These little things look nice and are easy to maintain. The 494 has a small vibratory motor that makes everything work. Do you own the Greenberg Book that includes postwar Lionel accessory repair? If you do not, I might suggest that you purchase one. It would pay for itself from the first time you use. Back to the 494. Over the years I've bought a few, made repairs and on the layout they go. You might appreciate the Lionel 494 more. Shop around as Lionel has made many variations over the years. Good Luck, keep us posted.
