Greetings--I have been introduced to Marx trains and am trying to be as informed as possible, especially by following along with the forum. I hope a member can help me with information as I do not see it posted elsewhere. I have a 1666 loco and Allstate tender. The tender has a knuckle couple with some sort of way to remotely open it. Would any of the members have a moment to comment? Many, many thanks in advance. Jim.IMG_20160615_182537

Hi Martin.  Not sure of how much you know or don't regarding Marx so I'll offer some easy advice.  Take a look at the eBay listings for Marx.  There is a ton available in all kinds of condition.  More than I ever knew and was surprised at the number of new/unused items available.  Prices are reasonably low and you can acquire a lot on a small budget.  Do your homework so you know what a fair price for something is.  Marx locos generally run forever with just a little care.  I love Marx trains, especially from the 60's and early 70's.  Good luck and have fun.  BigRail

Lionel PW (and later) and Marx freight trucks (not the 3/16" scale variety) have the same wheelbase, so Lionel coupler "kits" can be used to make a Marx car compatible with Lionel (and other's) equipment, as more or less said above. It opens up all sorts of possibilities.

I did a Marx/K-line loco project some time ago. Note the coupler and Marx trucks. The problem is that the footboards on the tender keep the coupler armature from dropping enough to open the knuckle, essentially making it a dummy coupler. (Some careful adjustment or removal of part of the footboards would cure this, but I haven't done it.)

Doesn't matter; still a handy conversion.

Thank you, all, for the information.  I had intended to collect a few Hafners; first, I upgraded the original two rail with Marx three rail track, then a Marx 999 loco and cars came my way, then the 166 with smoke, then switches, then a searchlight, then I bought a piece of plywood.....

Great photo, D500!
