I have a matching SF B unit with dual motors on the way now, which supposedly can run on its own (I  see it has a RVS Unit Lockout switch beneath), and it also has a tether... My matching ABA set  is Premier and came out in 1997. (I don't know the item number off hand, but it's the popular El Capitan set with Proto-1.) The A-B-A set is Powered-Dummy-Dummy. The tether only carries the rear coupler and directional lighting, as far as I know. When I hook up this additional Powered B unit to make the set A-B-B-A, how is it going to sync with the powered A unit beyond RESET/FWD/NEU/RVS/NEU/etc. - for instance during FYS or Station Announcements which automatically triggers a change in direction without another power cut?

Would like to know how this should work before I couple them and break something. Thanks.

Normally for a PS-1 Powered A with Slave A or B, the 4 pin wires carry direction control signals via 3 of the 4 wires to the Slave DCRU (what is in your B unit) and the 4th wire is coupler signal (other coupler wire to chassis ground).  Lights of a slave unit are CV board controlled with a special circuit for the HL operation off the motor control circuit.

This would take some rewiring I believe. This unit may not be meant to work with yours.   Instructions may have some insight.  G
