Love my Menards train aisle, but I keep wondering why they don't add just a couple items to make a fully accesible train system?
-They sell 3 rail tracks, but no switches or transformers or 3-rail starter sets.
-They sell Fastrack-based sets, but no other Fastrack pieces.
-They sell alot of great cars, but no engines.
All this to say that you could start a Fastrack setup but couldn't go anywhere with it or you could supplement a 3-rail setup you have but couldn't start one.
Seems that if they could make 3-rail a viable option with the addition of
-An Engine
-A Transformer
-Right and left switches
Or they could carry Fastrack tracks, switches, etc.
Though I do Fastrack with my son, it seems like it wouldn't be hard -and would probably be wisest- to take the first option since they've already got everything else you'd need for a basic railway layout. It'd be great to be able to tell someone they can just go to Menards to build a railway for their kids, but it's not quite there yet. Menards is just on the edge of being the affordable option for complete (if somewhat basic) 3-rail railroading.
Has Menards made any comments on future plans in this direction?
