Mike G,

We thank you for making the trip to see us and I sincerely apologize for your disappointment, especially since we showed inventory in our system.

If you would be so kind as to let me know what store you visited, I can do a little digging and hopefully get to the bottom of this.

Hi Mark, it was the Dickinson  North Dakota  store.

you have been a forum member since 2012 you don't remember this subject coming up ever so often????

To,  Mark the Menards Train Guy.

Glad to see you back on the forum, You were on vacation I think.  In your absence, I had a question concerning the amperage drawn by a couple of your building and could not get and answer.  Would you be the person I should contact??  Tried customer service, but no help for me. Please give me your directions to a qualified and knowledgeable person.  I like Menards building But???   Menards Train Stuff does not like me.

My best regards

Tommy

Hi Nick, you must be the man and have Mark's personal email.  I have been here along time and have read almost everything about Menards. I have also bought several items from them and think they are a great company. The thing is Nick I did not see you there and you don't know what I was told. If you have been around then you know people bring things to Mark's attention here.

Mike G,

We contacted the Dickinson store and discovered that they had mistakenly pulled all of the train stuff off the shelves. The error was corrected and the train items have been returned to the shelves and these items can be found in the mezzanine with the seasonal items.

out of season 3

Thanks for your help!

MIKE G, all's well that ends well. Especially when it is with Mark and Menards. Hard to believe that would of been the same had it been another. So now you can end your trek on a high note. But......But.... I think you should still take time to swing by CABINET BOB'S place and pick up your Olive Branch prototype from him LOL.......Paul

Paul, you are right, Mark and Menards sure do know how to step up there game. I dought any other would have done this.

I wish I could go to Bob's, I would be there in a minute, but its just more then me and just the wife this trip.

Mike, when you're at the store, just find the stairway, it'll have a big orange sign saying "no children up stairs" it's not appearant that there is an up stairs but that's where you'll find the stuff. At my store it's over the lawn and garden department

Thanks Matt, I was up there last time and I think I checked everything on the second floor. But from the picture Mark posted I know right where it is!

Plus my wife will be really happy that it wont take an hour to find what I am looking for!

Great service Mark!!!!!! How about fixing this one.

I order a 6 pack of Morton hoppers and pay cash at the Massillon store. A week later they come in. I get them home and discover 4 of the 6 road #'s are crooked. 2 were borderline maybe worth keeping. I email customer service. They reply with a note stating they will email a FedEx shipping label, and state that Menards will send out a replacement 6 pack when the defective ones are received. I send them out the next day.

3 or 4 days go by and  I see Menards received the defective 6 pack.  A day or 2 later, I get an email stating Menards is sold out of the Morton hopper. All customer service can do is refund my money ( which I will have to drive back to the store to get it....45 minutes away). Keep in mind this is a gift for my son who knows all of this and is very disappointed. Why wouldn't customer service put back a 6 pack when they sent the return shipping label?   Now I see I have to wait til 7-1-17 for a new shipment. I will be impressed if you can fix this one. Thank you for your time.

If you look through old posts, Mark is very honest about stores only carrying train items during the holidays. There are a few exemptions to that but, I would not have driven that far without make a good old fashioned phone call. I believe they show items as in stock in the store so you can order them.

What would be the difference if someone stopped in the store or ordered online from the store? Either, the items shrink wrapped onto a pallet would have to be unwrapped. No, Menards website is set up to show inventory is available for shoppers to buy, not to be turned away with the message "We don't want to unpack that." Another procedure should have been followed.

The difference is, when you order online -  you have the option to have your order shipped to the Menard's store nearest you - or your home.

Shipping to the store nearest you is Free.

You both completely misunderstood the scenarios. One, when Menards' website shows inventory at a particular store, it means that inventory is available for sale from the store, period. It's pretty simple. Second, the ship-to-store option is for warehouse inventory ordered online by a customer and shipped to a specified store. That had no relevance to what Mike G. was trying to do on his last visit.

Mark has now confirmed that the North Dakota store made a mistake. The problem has been fixed. And the attitude thrown at Mike G. should be followed by an apology from those who somehow found a reason to criticize him for his reasonable frustration.

Good job, Mark. Honestly, I think of you every time I step into my local Menards.

You may want to change the name of the thread then. Maybe add something about this great customer service.

I've noticed this a lot lately on the forum, why are people being such jerks?  Isn't this supposed to be a fun hobby that we share and help one another with?  If the only comment you can make is one like either of the above, maybe take a step back and determine if you want to be in adult hobby or play with Thomas the Tank Engine.

As for the topic, what a class move by Menards.  Wish there was one closer to me!

jini5,

I apologize for the circumstances. Ultimately, we did not anticipate selling out of this hopper in such a short amount of time. It is clear that we did not make enough of this hopper for the initial production run. As you mentioned, more are being produced and they should be here in July.

To be honest, I've never encountered a situation like this in which the item that was being returned sold out while it was in transit. I can assure you that we will look into ways of preventing this from happening in the future.

Mark will respond to you ... through this forum. Probably in response here. He doesn't do it through email. Many have tried.

He will undoubtedly tell you to email guest@menard-inc.com so that your concern can be addressed by the proper person.

Hi Tommy,

Jim R. is right. The best way to reach us is guest@menard-inc.com. While I may be able to help you with some things, the above email is the best way to have your questions answered to the best of our abilities.

Menards advertises in OGR and CTT, and have for some time, so I am somewhat surprised anyone on this forum wouldn't have heard about Menards' train products outside of this forum.

As for the stores, that's less surprising. Menards started in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and has been expanding from that spot for decades now, but is still a middle-of-the-country chain of ever-growing home improvement stores.

I laugh when people say they wish they had a Menards closer to them merely because of train stock. It's really a small, seasonal part of the chain's floor space.

I like Menards more for its value-priced tools, lighting center, aisle merchandising, bathroom and kitchen displays, certain non-home improvement offerings and great seasonal department (from Halloween season through Christmas especially). Subjectively, I'd say it's much friendlier than walking through The Home Depot. The train stock? Yeah, I like it in November and December when there's lots of stuff in part of one aisle, but I spend a majority of my time in other parts of the store even then.

The customer service elements merely keeps happy customers happy. So I am still happy.
