Run 259 has a product announcement for Menards items for 2012. A Lionel C&NW set is mentioned for this years exclusive set, and 7 flatcars. No mention who will be making the flatcars, my guess is probably some will be generic O gauge flatcars like were offered the past two years. Also some more buildings and accessories.

Will it be a Chicago & North Western FT A-B diesel at the head of the train set.
Andrew
I wish they would offer add-on cars for their Wisconsin Central and C&NW passenger sets.

Ed H.: I just got the new OGR issue and don't see such a Menards product announcment anywhere. What page is it on? Thanks.
At the end of the last Christmas season, some of the stores still had Woodland Scenics buildings that were not put on closeout. They apparently put them in storeage for sale this next holiday season. Pat B.

Page 15. The photo is of a Menards Garden Center, but the train set and other products are also mentioned.

No diesel this year.
Thank you Allen.
I have checked Menards.com for each of the last several days and the 2012 Chritmas O Gauge offerings are not listed yet. The OGR product announcement said they would be posted on the website by Sept. 1.
I bought two of the rolling stock pieces last year, including the one with the illumiated Menards sign. I must say I was disappointed that the mounting bases for the sign on the flatcar were attached to the flat car by hot glue which did not stick. Hopefully Menards and its vendor will remedy that this year and NOT use hot glue to construct of any of its offerings.
I am neither pro-Menards or anti-Menards. That being said, they, Menards, make the cars as inexpensively as possible. I bought the 3 lighted items(rolling stock) last year and would agree with the glue issue. It also appeared that the package with the trailer had been reopened and some parts reglued. This was discussed in another thread almost a year ago. If it's an FT set, I welcome it. It's nice to have a different variety of sets. I do wish they would do other road names. They seem to issue railroads that run in the upper midwest. Milwaukee Road, Great Northern, M&St.L, etc. would be a nice change. But it could be a licensing issue as well.
Steve
Milwaukee Road Steam was in 2011. Still available at some stores this November.
How would you like a Milwaukee Road FT A-B set leading a set?
Andrew
Geez, I should have remembered that, I bought the set. I don't care much for the 0-8-0's though.
We just got back from the local Menards. My wife bet me that the Christmas displays would be up. I won the bet. Halloween displays only, at this time. None of the train stuff is on display, including the buildings.
Well, the C&NW set is now on the Menard's site. For $299.00 you get an 0-8-0, tender with CNW logo, a boxcar, two flat cars (one with semi-tractor, the other with a flatbed trailer with building supplie, and a green CNW caboose with yello cupalo.
Sounds good, Mike. I'm still waiting for those seven special flatcars to materialize on line.
Does anyone have a complete listing and possibly photos of all the Menard's Lionel train sets to date? When did Menard's start having Lionel make exclusive train sets for them? I live in Marion, Iowa and have a Menards nearby and want to ask them if they will have a running display this year. Does anyone else have a Menards that has a running display and if so any photos? I'm digging this cause its like the service station sets Lionel made a long time ago.

Menards posted a silver Lionel Menards water tower with red blinker light to their website today. I guess they are adding items a little at a time.
In the town I used to live in, that had a Menards. I recall one season for sure and perhaps a second that the Menards set up the actual train set as part of a display. It was with the Dept. 56 type buildings Menards sells. I've wondered about the displays myself, whether they were optional from store to store or if HQ required the local stores to set them up. I seem to recall the Wisconsin Central passenger set, setup one year. The Menards I used to frequent has not had a display layout for the last 3 years. The earlist Menards set I remember is the Wisconsin Central passenger set. I too would like to know if there were any sets before that set.

The Menards description says that the water tower it is, in fact, from Lionel.
I went to the site and all I could find was a Pennsy Flyer set, 4 piece set of FasTrack and the little Polar Express. What keywords/categories should I be looking under?

I don't remember exactly. I think it was about 7 -8 years ago. The first set that I remember was a Wisconsin Central freight set. It had a little 4-4-2 steamer, a few WC boxcars, and WC caboose. It shows up on ebay now and then. From what I remember:
2012 CNW 0-8-0 freight set
2011 Milwaukee Road 0-8-0 freight set
2010 Soo Line RS3 freight set
2009 CNW 4-4-2 passenger set and CNW 4-4-2 freight set
2008 Wisconsin Central 4-4-2 passenger set
I'm pretty fuzzy before that. I have never seen an operating display at any Menard's. The Soo Line set is the only diesel set I recall. The only roads I've seen are CNW, Soo Line, Wisconsin Central, and Milwaukee Road. These are roads that served their home state of Wisconsin.
Hope this helps.
Eric, the only thing you are missing is the water tower. Search for "Lionel" on Menards.com And I now assume the water tower does NOT blink... although it does have a red marker. For $20 you aren't going to get a blinker... ones with blinkers run $30 ++. It looks good, nonetheless and I guess you can add an LED to the red marker if you can get the tower apart.
Thanks. I looked under "Trains" because I also wanted to make sure I saw the Woodland Scenics buildings if they were there.
Put "Lionel Trains" in search.
The buildings are now listed.
Good Day,
What is the web address to view the buildings?
It appears they have the coke set too.
There could be a Lionel set with a Wisconsin Central GP38-2 diesel, WC Waffle-side Boxcar, WC ACF Center Flow 3-bay Covered Hopper, WC High-cube boxcar, classic standard O gondola in the WC light gray with Red lettering scheme, WC Extended-vision Caboose.

I'm an east coast person. This is the first time I ever heard of Menards. On reading first few posts I was thinking how did I never hear of this train manufacture named Menards? Furthe reading set me straight. Great deal on water towers. I'm ordering 2 and will most likely paint and add flashing light.
Regarding Menards shipping . . . last season, I could not find the flat car with the lighted pickup locally, so I ordered it from Menards. I received it in a reasonable amount of time, but it appearded that it had been carelessly placed in the shipping box with minimal packing material. The plastic box that all recent menards flat cars come shipped in was open, the truck and all parts were everywhere inside the shipping box. Luckly all the parts were there and I was able to reassemble. I was very surprised at the carelessness in which the item was packed for shipping. The shipping box was not damaged but I'm sure handling during shipping added to the problems. I'm not saying that all Menards items are shipped this way, just a caveat.
Regarding their shipping, a few years ago I ordered one of the passenger sets from a store over the phone. The set arrived packed only in the Lionel set box (no shipping carton) with just the Lionel clear plastic bag covering the set. Hard to explain that one to the boss.
This page has all their O gauge offerings.

The buildings are sweet! I'm definitely in for the cycle shop and the country store, and maybe the corner store too. The two Menards modern offerings are interesting too - the store and the garden center put together would be great for a modern era midwestern layout. They are both animated.
John
I hope they do some seperate sale rolling stock again this year. I've been infrequently checking the Menards web page and so far nothing.
Steve
The same with me, Steve. The blurb in OGR said there will be seven different rolling stock pieces this year, and that they were expected to be posted by Sept. 1 (I think). Thats quite a few more pieces than last year. Not the greatest quality, but I am interested to see what they are.
Quality, yeah, not good, but not bad either. My one complaint is the couplers seem to have a tight fit. Sometimes they are a pain to couple to other cars.
Steve
The Menard's buildings are Woodland Scenic O gauge buildings custom built for Menards. They also offer a modern Menards store and a modern Menards garden center. They have at least one porcelain Christmas building. Does anyone know if the Lionel individual freight cars are traditional or scaled sized? Paul
Pholsen, the individual sale rolling stock is not made by Lionel... Menards must get it done by a very low level supplier. They are usually flat cars with loads. Will see what they have this year. (Lionel DID make the individual sale cars for the first year or so, but not after that).
