Trying to come up with a plan to fit in 1 of 2 differant paces. Space 1 is 78" deep and 200" long. Spot 2 would be in the form of a L. Still 78" deep on both parts of the L. Long part of the L is 168" with the short being 160". Both measurments are from the corner of the L. My plan is to run a mixed bag from the postwar up to today. Entertaining for kids to watch and have the ability to change out buildings and operating assesories depending on the seasons. Running a maximum of 2 trains at once. Useing a min 054 with 064 easment curves(Been reading 21 great track plans for compact layouts). Planning on using Gargraves and Ross. I would like to have 2 reverse loops with having the 2 mains being connected. Theres about 5 layouts that I have seen that really impress me. 4 being from 21 great track plans for compact layouts. Just a bit beyond basic, Planning the North Ridge railroad, Something old and something new, The easy A railroad and then the Eltringham Station in Classic Toy Trains. Not looking to have any of it be scaled and detailed nor am I looking for it to be just toy. Someplace in the middle with a mix. Not looking at any particular time period or railroad. I would like to have the ability to do a little switching but primarily just to run trains on a fun whimsical layout with some track side assesories for kids to whatch or operate. Nothing complicated. I just don't know the best direction to go to achive something entertaining, fun and amazing to whatch.  Comes down to it what I have here is all I have Keep hitting mental blocks trying to figure out what to do. Suggestions ?

I agree with John. Draw a floor plan of the space and post it with what you think might be a good track plan and I am sure you will get lots of feedback. I don't think too many people here want to design your layout from scratch, but many will offer suggestions if you give then something to look at.

I definitely feel where you’re at.  I’m in the planning stages also trying to determine the space itself and how to lay out the tracks within.  This forum has been an awesome resource.  Post pictures and diagrams to help others understand your space.

I’ve used a combination of actually laying out track on the floor and SCARM design software ( well worth the price ) to start designing.  Once you start doing that, reality sets in and you have a better idea of what will actually work.  I started out wanting a minimum 072 outer loop but realistically it compromised the space and didn’t leave me with many options other than a big loop.

I would choose your top few priorities and design to that.  If you try to accomplish too much in a limited space, you may never find the perfect answer.  Given what you described above, a couple of simple loops with a few sidings might fit the bill. That would leave lots of room in the center to change out building and accessories.  A side suggestion… If you are looking to change out the buildings and accessories, you may want to take the time to use Deutsch connectors which would give you the ability to quickly unplug and plug different accessories in.

Keep it simple! This should be enjoyable so don’t let it stress you out. I have to keep telling myself that so I don’t spin my wheels. :-)

One important thing to remember - REACH!  You are not going to be able to reach from the front edge of you 78" width to the back edge and you will not be able to reach the back corner of your "L" shaped joint location.  Unless your available space allows for at least a 2.5 foot "walk-around" space on all sides, the dimensions you have to work with will be much smaller.  However, if your layout has to be against one or more walls, you could build it on roll-around casters to reach the "back" when necessary.

Hope this works. This is what I have as of now but I just don't know. I still am not sure about assesories and any other buildings. Plus access to the wall sides where I want display shelves. Thought about casters to roll it out some but I am not sure on that either. Table hight is another issue as both my knees are shot and my back is not great either.  Looking to have this as a country or small town with a mountain in the corner. Again this is not going to be a highly detailed layout but something in the middle where operating assesories wont look to out of place. I am currently trying to figure something out if I was to switch places and place my O in the upper left where I currently have the S gauge track at.  The pink line is a window.
