Welcome to June!  With several days remaining in Spring, for some people, Summer is already underway.  It might start on Memorial Day, or Father's Day, or whichever day you "open the pool." A good part of the longer days, is you can catch trains more hours in the day.  This thread gives you the chance to share some of what you were able to see.

At times, the Steamtown National Historic Site takes on the appearance of several railroads.  Here it looks like a shop on the Lehigh Valley line.  SW1no. 1901 is painted in a LV-like style from when it ran on  a LV heritage line in Towanda, PA.  She sits next to authentic LV business car 353, built in 1916.

Other times, it resembles the Postwar Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, as this F3 in Lackawanna colors zips by the Scranton station, now a Radisson Hotel, on a tour of the yard limits.

In the distance, we see the tall Pattern Shop and roofline of DL&W's 1909 Erecting shop complex, now an artillery plant.

I also took the chance to photograph this train which would head to Moscow, PA on Saturday, May 30.  RS11 no. 1804 holds down this job.

On this unit, the long hood is forward, so on this trip, the loco is backing its way to Moscow, passing the DL&W station.

Coming back home later in the day, the engine is running the right way.

All right, folks.  Your turn to add to the color of railroading in the real world.  If you have not been trackside lately, the lazy hazy crazy days of summer are near, and that might be all you need.  Have a great week.

These were taken in Chadbourn, NC on the way home. This was once the offices of the Carolina Southern Railroad, now it looks like a locomotive graveyard.

I also traveled through Georgia and South Carolina last week and saw some interesting railroad related sights...

Waycross, GA has a lot of RR activity, with a few old road names passing through.

South Carolina had the first successful scheduled steam railroad service in America between Charleston and Hamburg, and the world's oldest railroad junction at Branchville.

And we saw quite a load of wheels on I-77 that I am happy remained secure as I drove behind and beside it.

I decided to redo this post with more pics. I hope this makes it more enjoyable.

On 5/30/2015, I went to Cumberland,MD. to claim a cab ride on WMSR #734, however #734 was OOS, so I was given a free ride on WMSR GP30 #501 (X-PRR #2249, Conrail #2131, built 1965). I look forward to a rescheduled steam cab ride this fall.
My thanks to Engineer Mike and Brakeman Jim for their hospitality and tolerance.

Engineer Mike was particularly interesting as he put in 37 years service on CSX in engine service, and worked out of New Castle,PA., and Cumberland in his career.

A video from last week at the D.A.R.E. Model Railroad Club. We recently built an extension off our big O gauge layout. This train was the second test train to see how far power from the old layout extended onto the extension. Also included are some photos from two years ago of a set of NS standard cabs passing through Pittsburgh Penn Station.

Memorial Day 2015 246

Wednesday was cloudy with rain all day, so photos from the train on the way from Lynchburg to Washington are few. Here's some that may be of interest:

NS bunk cars near Orange, VA, and look at that classic ESSO sign!

NS track equipment, probably used by the bunk car residents.

A remnant of the Southern Railway in the weeds at Manassas.

The US Capitol, with scaffolding in place.

All photos taken from the window of Amtrak #176.
