Hey Guys - as I'm finalizing my order of models from Erik I began to consider adding one of the high hood N+W SD 45's - question ; how many paint schemes did these engines see over their N+W ownership ? Considering a light blue / yellow scheme version - were there any other variations beyond the black/white ones or 1776 ? I know there are some N+W guys who can answer this one straight away ! Thanks in advance , Bryan.

Not sure if this is the correct answer to my own question ; from 63' - 66' there was black with gold on freight engines and from 66'-70' there was the same gold lettering on blue bodies. It appears that along with the black bodies with (various) white lettering this was it for the SD45 . If I've missed any please correct me . Thanks, Bryan.
Bryan:
There were 4 versions of paint schemes for the NW SD45. Erik list 4 of the NW versions which I have ordered one of each. 1) The Blue w/half moon logo or hamburger logo, as delivered, 2) the NW block lettering or black dip scheme, 3) the NORFOLK and WESTERN
paint scheme, the last before merger, and the famous NW bicentennial 1776, which Erik says is VERY popular! There was the block scheme on the wrecked SD45 also that was rebuilt with a low hood. Also note that the N&W had three versions of the truck sideframes on the SD45s

Hi Guys - Thanks for the answers - I'm pretty much set on a blue/gold early version and trying to decide on another .

Chris / Stephen - just had a back and forth with Erik on the blue N+W units - he said he wasn't sure if the 1724 shown in the photos was a faded out unit - was there only one shade of blue on these units ? He will only be doing one shade of blue and he thought it would be darker than the 1724 in the photo. It would be hard to imagine a blue going from very dark to that in the span of 5 or 6 years . I think I saw somewhere that photo is dated 1971 .
Thanks,
Bryan
Most definately faded! All I ever saw around Buffalo were the dark blue we all know and love. Mike S
Thanks Mike - that must have been some seriously poor paint - if it was in the red family I could see it being very photo reactive , but for a blue to fade out like that it a relatively short time frame - WOW !
Bryan
Erik has been given the correct color for the N&W blue used by professional painters.

Anyone have a good shot of a newly painted engine in the blue ? Everywhere I look I find photos of engines that are so dirty that it's hard to determine if they are blue or black .
Thanks,
Bryan
Here is a fresh paint shot...If he goes with what we mostly think of in terms of the Pevlar blue it will be correct....or slightly lighter or darker...
I think if you look around at photos you will see that the blue varied. The repaints on the ex Wabash and NKP power was some what different in shading from what most think of in terms of the Pevlar blue...the SD's showing up in 66' were a slightly different shade as well. The Pevlar blue faded....fast.
Here is a photo of a faded paint job....
And some SD's, again you must take into account the different paint mix, or dirt and lighting and type/quality of film....

Hey Chris - Many Thanks - beautiful shots - exactly what I was looking for . I'm ordering a mix of different roads , but wanted to order a pair of one paint scheme - I think the blue N+W SD's are in the running for that .Appreciate your efforts posting them .
Regards,
Bryan
Your welcome Bryan. Yeah the darker Pevlar blue is what most of us think of, so if that is the color they go with it will be a good looking pair of engines you'll have there.
