I'm debating on whether to buy a new Legacy Genset switcher, as we build our modern era layout. But, switching performance is of utmost importance.

 

- "Minimum Curve: O-42/O-54 Recommended" Lionel says. What exactly does that mean? Our yard is 0-48 Fastrack .... track and turnouts.

 

- How smoothly does it run/start/stop, these single-motor/diecast-body switchers? Slow speed operation?

 

We'd really like to have this ultra-modern switcher on our layout. But, again, switching performance matters most. I have been extremely pleased with my Legacy GP7's, and I'm thinking of trying my hand at re-painting a PRR unit into NS or CSX (I see Microscale sells decals for both). I guess that would not be prototypical, but I know it would perform really well (and leave me cash for another Legacy AC6000).

Smoothest slow speed loco that I've ever seen, even with a load. However, because of the fixed pilots, you really need to have it pointed nearly straight down the track for doing switching work. It'll run around O54, but you cant couple cars on an 054 curve. Even with O72s, because the couplers are independent of the trucks, they dont swing, so you need to be going straight in order to get the couplers to align.

I can't speak for how it will switch on your curves but mine runs beautiful and at very very slow speeds. I just run mine around my 0-84 Fastrack curves but I don't think you would be disappointed with it. The sounds are awesome! You can hear each Gen start as you gain speed like the prototype. If you leave it in idle for a few minutes the engine sound will shut down just like the prototype.The smoke unit will smoke you out of the room on low!
