So I'm planning on weathering one of my steam locomotives. In addition to that I want to add some small minor details, such as coal overspill on the tender deck or shortening the gap between the engine and tender. But the main thing I was thinking of doing was adding crew details, namely things that the crew would do to make the engine their own. Some suggestions I have heard were american flags flanking the headlight, and toolboxes//boxes under the tender eaves on the deck. I was thinking something more along the lines of a case of coke on the tender deck under the eaves. This loco is a PRR Mikado #9630 from K Line. The era I'm shooting for is anywhere between the mid/late 30s to very early 50s. Any ideas?

The Internet and (period) steam locomotive photos. Not exactly burdensome research.
Most railroads in the modern steam era did not encourage or even allow personalization of company equipment. The Southern Railway did indeed allow some of that (I don't care for it much, or, at least, much of it).
Now, incidental details like the coke bottle and the like can be nice in small doses.
You will find far more personalization - intentional and incidental - on switchers and branch or short line equipment than you will on mainline locos and equipment (especially for mainline passenger service).
There are certainly multitudes of exceptions to what I just said. Still.
There are a lot of small appliance items related to a steam locomotive. Also a lot of piping. These photos are of the one remaining Pennsylvania 4-8-2 Mountain, Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. I was hoping to add a few details to my Weaver M1a/b. Click on the underlined phrase for a Photobucket slideshow.
One detail that MTH adds to their engines are rope pulls for whistle and bell. I think they would appropiate for your engine. Later engines had them activated by air and eliminated the ropes. Use .010-.012" brass or music wire.
I have also been adding cab curtains and engine decks. Cab curtains were cast from those used on the latest MTH engines but applicable to most others.

That's a really good idea. I could probably use cloth wadded up for the curtains. Not sure what would work for the drop plate. I'm not sure that my tender deck and cab are level though but if they are I might try it.... provided that it would still fit into its box.
Cloth would work for the curtains. I use Precision Scale diamond plate brass sheet for the decks but plain brass would work as well. I posted more info in this thread.

A detail parts company, Precision Scale Co., Inc. There is an online parts catalog. There are also paper catalogs of detail parts that can be purchased. Click on the link.
Bowser is another detail parts source. I had done a radiophone addition to a set of Weaver E8's
Also added the lift rings and windshield wipers.
