I was considering bidding on this 8020 A unit to cut it up(open the apron for a coupler) and make a trailing powered unit for a two-motored A-B-A set(to add to my A-B set).  I just got the email with the closing bid $$ and was somewhat surprised!

Was I about to cut up something special or unusual?   I singled this one out because it was not perfect - just mechanically complete.

Does anyone see anything I am missing with regard to this Alco?  It appears to be identical to every other 8020 warbonnet including the one I already have.

I don't think there was any more to this situation than two bidders who were willing to duke it over this particular unit. I don't believe there's anything rare about the 8020. Also, I noticed the herald on the nose is not in the best of condition. It just appears to be a case in which there were two guys who really wanted it for whatever reason.

Here's a powered/non-powered pair up for bid right now:

For Rob's (ADCX Rob) auction: I want to know where those people are when I am trying to sell something .

For Bob's (CNJ 3676) auction: That pair of 8020's are early ones, judging by the scout type collector assembly on the motor unit. Plus it comes in the original box. It will be interesting to see where the auction ends. As I've been writing for a while now, people are collecting early MPC.

The scout type collector assembly was replaced because it was sensitive to dirt, and unless both the rollers and track are kept nice and clean, the engine tends to loose power going over switches, uncoupling tracks, and cross tracks.
