I've always liked the AEM-7 but with a smaller layout with 0-27 track and 42" max radius curves I've stayed away. I'm looking at an MTH 20-5501-1 and contemplating pulling the trigger. Looking at the model is it only the ladders that limit truck rotation causing the minimum 42" radius or is it side skirts or just limit of truck travel due to wiring and other components? I've got one or two other MTH proto1 engines but usually run conventional and some TMCC could this be converted to TMCC and what would that cost?

The item #20-5501-1 brings up a GG1.
I have done a couple of conversions. They are a tight fit, but it is possible.
I have the most recent production AEM7, delivered around Christmas 2016. They MEAN IT when they say 0-42 minimum. I assume there have been no design changes since the first PS1 production.
On 0-42, the wheels will even rub the shell if a section of curve is bent a hair tighter than 0-42. There is NO WAY it will run on anything tighter. I'd argue that, while it will begrudgingly tolerate 0-42, it is really an 0-54 minimum engine for it to be really happy.
No reason I can think of it couldn't be converted to TMCC. As Glen says, it's fairly tight in there, but I'm pretty sure there's room.
Thanks everyone. Sounds like my curves are too tight.
Well Coach Joe... That could be a good thing! Especially for women.
I can't speak for all the MTH versions...I don't know the product number of mine but it's PS2 with a 3 volt board and I only use it on 031 MTH track...

Kind of looks like the New Brunswick New Jersey train station.
