Hello everyone,

I have a MTH 5610 PS2 gg1 with a puffer issue. I put maybe too much smoke fluid in it after having that run it for a while and the smoke unit won't shoot out smoke intermittently like it is supposed to. It is supposed to make a puff sound and shootouts smoke about every minute or so. I blew into the smoke unit several times and smoke was down inside the engine coming out of the sites when I did that. It will make the puff sound and will not Puff Smoke Out intermittently. Can you please advise if I should be able to feel the fan working cuz I really don't feel anything. Please advise what you think how so when might be wrong with it and how to fix it.

I don't have any ways of testing outside of running it on my layout.

Any help would be appreciate6,Jerry

Take shell off and inspect.  Fan does not run all the time it might pulse some.  It also reduces heat until ready to do the boiler releases.  I have not looked up your model, but some have large smoke units and others small.  If you have a small smoke unit, you really need to not add too much fluid.  Picture would help.  G

Since you have smoke when you blow into it, we can guess that the problem is the smoke motor.  Assuming that you are running it with DCS you can try this to confirm that it is the motor:

  • locate the softkey FPR press it once.  After about 2-3 second you should hear the pressure release sound and see smoke (or not).
  • turn the volume all the way down and press FPR.  You should hear the smoke motor.  If not it is the motor.

Remove the smoke unit from the locomotive and check the motor by applying 3-6 volts DC.  If it works, the problem maybe one of the FET’s that turn it off and on.  If it doesn’t work, replace the motor.

If you are uncomfortable taking it apart, contact one of the MTH techs on the forum.

you only want to apply 1.5 volt battery to smoke motor when board HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED, otherwise you can damage the board! if the motor won't run  on 1.5 volts the smoke motor is BAD!  and needs to be replaced ! you know you might have flooded your wick and if saturated with fluid it will possibly never smoke and have to replace the wick! they are very cheap from Mth but from MTH the minimum order is 5 motors if they have them in stock!
