C&O fans in for a BIG surprise

Always loved the C&O steam turbine and Art Deco coaling towers and I was thrilled when they announced it long ago in Proto1. Unfortunately they did not produce the Vista Dome equipped Chessie streamliner passenger train with a Vista Dome observation for it to pull. If the catalog illustration is correct we'll pass on this one too. Don't need rivet counter correct domes, just a close replication. Rather than a full dome, it's time for MTH to change the observation car tool so they can produce dome observation cars when needed. (I'm guessing we'll never see MTH Budd cars with fluted roofs.)

Nothing really new except the C&0 steam turbine. This is at least the 5 or 6 time for the SP GS- 4 daylight and they still have not added the brake hoses on the front pilot. Ironically, their HO ànd G gauge versions have them. Didn't go as far to see if there were any new European engines, of which, they do a very nice job.

Some long absent lines return like RF&P and L&N in particular.

What is new are some individual diesel model price jumps:

- Page 80-81.  SD70Ace diesels are up $20 over the 2017 v2 $499.95. UP Ace with Flag up $30.  The UP Spirit $30 differential is understandable with the additional paint masks but the others?  What has changed?

Pretty much. Just new Paint schemes. However...

Amtrak Fan's - Second chance for FP45's!

Faux paint schemes on an otherwise beautiful Canadian 100 Ton Hopper car. NOT buying them.

I see MTH copied Scott Mann's ALCo demo's and no Passenger car set to go with it. [ Gee Andy- So much for "boring dip Demo paint Schemes! Maybe you will Paint the ALCo FA-2's and the

EMD SD80 in the Demo scheme after all!]

I am intrigued on the GP40 repower Demo unit. I have to find out the year that was done. A little web research shows somewhere around 2008-2007.

For the first time in several, four or five, years there are several interesting things -- yes, all reissues from the past, but in most cases reissues from more than 5+ years ago, first time in PS3.0 or even 2.0 outside of the 5v board, good or bad, I am in for:

C&O Turbine, UP Coal Turbine, Alco PA in war bonnet (passed on the GGD versions), a "b" unit for the NYC E8 in green, and the Railking FP45s.

Can someone explain the fascination with experimental steam turbines that failed?  The fascination began with the endlessly and universally reproduced PRR S2 of which only one prototype was built.  What's next, "Jawn Henry"?  Sunset reproduced both "Jawn" and "Chessie"

There are so many locomotives that succeeded and are ignored, both past and present.  My favorite being the SIRT BL20G, which can also be offered in various MNCR color schemes:

Passing the Clifton Shop

To balance the scales I offer one of my least favorites, the GE 70 Tonner in NYCTA, that Forum regular "SIRT" and others have been suggesting for years.  How about a Milwaukee Road specific GP38-2?

Simple: They're "big engines."

Size matters.  Big sells, small doesn't.

(I'm getting a chuckle with the PRR turbines lettered for UP and C&O...)

I have to give MTH an Attaboy for the flatcars carrying M10 Tank Destroyers and Half Tracks with Quad 50 cals on them in both Railking and Premiere.  Too bad I am finished building my military train or I would be out some bucks. Maybe I will order one of each just for the heck of it.

The number of "copies" built and the ultimate demise of any prototype has no bearing on its being interesting or desirable as a model. If that were the metric (so 2010's!) for production of models, no steam locos and most diesels (seen any F3's  or Erie Builts in the yards lately?) and practically all electrics do not belong in any catalogue.

A better question might be: do we need more GP anythings

I would love to see a well-done Jawn in RK Imperial, and the C&O turbine, too. And a PRR Q-1 (the Q-1, not the Q-2). I can run the big stuff, but a nice RK Imperial (or Lionmaster) would enable me to enjoy the design at a better price and length. The RK Triplex is a good example of an Imperial home run.

That scale Chessie on a curve makes a UP 4-8-8-4 look like a switcher.
