I just received these. Are they 
supposed to be O Gauge? They are GIGANTIC AND 9" TALL

A reproduction of the Lionel prewar originals. Many accessories from that era were better suited to SG size.

The original lamp posts were sold as accessories for both gauges.
They were a toy train accessory. Realism wasn’t Lionel’s primary concern in the 1930s, and those lights looked fabulous on Standard gauge or O gauge toy train layouts. MTH’s reproductions are great pieces, but obviously not intended for a scale O gauge world, which is why they were marketed under its RailKing line.
I used mine as "Track Lamps" to light the railway just like a normal sized street lamp lights the road way. Not prototypical but it looks nice.
