Hi, I just purchased this MTH Hudson and I am curious about its smokestack. It seems to have the ability to move up and down. Can anyone help me understand what’s going on with this. Thanks, Larry

It was used to clear smoke away from the locomotive/train when it was in the up position: http://sfrhms.org/files/Sandifer/Stacks/Tele.htm
The MTH model you have (I have that one and it's sister 3463) has a stack that duplicates the function. Lift the center of the stack up and it will stay up. You can push it back down as well.

The AT&SF Hudsons had extendable or telescoping exhaust stacks which I believe were operated off of compressed air. Apparently this was a way to better lift the exhaust smoke higher off the boiler. The Santa Fe used these appliances on many of their mainline steam locomotives. I am not sure if the MTH one is operable or stationary. Some O scale models give the user a separate extended stack to exchange with the lowered version.

See my picture above. It for sure works, and stays up when you put it in the upright position. I run mine with the stack extension up all the time.
Thanks so much for getting back to me. It seems like when the stack is in the up position smoke puff out like normal but also it ends up putting smoke rings up higher… Pretty cool… Thanks again everybody
