With the recent release of the upcoming MTH catalog cover on the York boxcar showing an Amtrak Genesis in phase V I've been watching the auction sites expecting to see a few of the first run units for sale. Well the listings have started!!!

Although one seller is expecting to get a minimum of $550 or buy it now for $750 there is another that is a true auction. This may be a good time to grab a deal. It will be interesting to see what the collectors actually get.

Why would they bring such a premium if they're being produced my MTH?  I'm obviously missing something.

I can't help but wonder about your comments. I have to guess that you meant that they are older? It always sounds like your bashing.

Boy, that comes from left field!  Why do you think I'm bashing anything or anybody?  Let me speak slowly, maybe you'll understand.

MTH is producing a new Amtrak Genesis in phase V livery with PS/3.  Why would an old MTH Amtrak Genesis in phase V livery command a premium price when it has inferior and unreliable PS/2 5V board?  What is "bashing" about that, I'm asking what makes the older model valuable.

Are you just looking to start an argument?

How an old GP-20 enters into the conversation clearly is something only you can understand, because I sure don't get it!

So here's where I stand on this.... I have 2 of the Walthers ones; one that is still 5V, and another that has PS3 by virtue of a frame swap. I also have the Walthers prototype paint sample shell.  I'm still gonna buy the new version, maybe all the numbers depending on what other versions they do (I still need a pair of silver roof Phase IVs)... because the 10 or so P40s and 42s that I have just doesnt seem adequate

If they don't repeat numbers I dont think the value of the old ones will drop.... they seem to churn regularly on ebay, but not that frequently. Take a look at the prices of any of the older Genesis releases... PS1 version excluded, they seem to hold up pretty well. The fade stripe models of the same vintage as the Walthers model go for $300ish as well. And they say there's no demand for Amtrak. They may not continue to go for $650 a piece, but I doubt they're going to plummet.

If they wanted to "preserve" the original Walthers models, then they could have done the original version of Phase V with the blue frame stripe. I doubt they'll do that though, its much easier to just re-shoot the model they've already got. Perhaps this time they'll get the color right.

Very cool about the paint sample. Lol about needing more!!!

Good points. I can see that happening as well.
