I have read that the MTH E8's are based on the old Weaver molds.

Are the shells interchangeable. Can I put old Weaver shells on a MTH body.

I would like to run Weaver Southern Pacific blackwidow shells on the MTH body's. Any issues with the added boards and speaker for the proto hardware?

MTH has purchased several sets of diesel molds from Weaver (widely believed to include the SD40-2, U25B, and VO-1000). In the process of adapting them for their use, MTH sometimes alters the mounting arrangements. I have never tried to swap E-8 shells, but I did take apart Weaver and MTH VO-1000's to see if I could swap the shells. They did appear to be basically the same casting, but a couple of the mounting pillars had been changed and there were some other minor changes that would have made the swap a lot of work. I gave up. Hopefully you will have better luck with the E-8's, but I'm passing along my story as a cautionary note.

I think the MTH E-8 B unit shell will fit the Weaver body, but the Weaver shell I believe is a bit to narrow to fit the MTH E-8 body.  I tried it with my Weaver Amtrak phase-2 B unit and the extra add on MTH Amtrak phase-1 E-8 B unit.  The only thing is that I would have to put the MTH trucks(one with the tether connection) on the Weaver E-8 Body and open up each end of the of the body(like MTH's) for the tether wire to run thru.
