Good morning,

I recently purchased MTH Railking item 30-74827, which is the NYC Stop Look and Listen boxcar with flashing crossing gate LEDs.  I placed the car on the Fast Track around my Christmas Tree which is controlled by a Lionel CW80 transformer.  The lights on the car operated for about 5 minutes but then stopped working and I could detect a burning smell from the car.  I figured one or more of the boards are now bad and need replaced.  I remember reading on this forum in the past that the CW80 transformer may have been incompatible with some MTH products, but I thought it may have been only certain MTH locomotives.  Could the transformer have damaged the electronics in this item?

I plan to take the car to a hobby shop for repair, is there anything that needs to be done to prevent it from happening again?  Or should I not use the CW80?

Thanks, and Merry Christmas.

Rob

IMO you had a defective board.  I don't think it was the CW-80.  To your point, the incompatibility between the CW-80 and some MTH products lies in other types of electronics.  The electronics in a blinking boxcar is very basic.

I figure this is repaired under warranty so you aren't inclined to play detective...but would be interesting to see a photo of the defective board.  If not immediately obvious from visual inspection, you can usually still sniff around the board for a few days after the event to localize the culprit component(s).
