John, I have been trying to hook up my 30-11012 gates to the isolated track (which works with other accessories) by-passing the ITAD but can only get the lights working. I know the gate works as I tested it on a ITAD. I am not sure how the blue wire hooks up as I keep getting a short. Do you a simple wire diagram?

Thanks, Paul

Go to www.azatrax.com.    Find crossing signals O scale. They show the MTH setup using their components and an insulated rail setup. Click on the various links to see all your options. They show the relay John H shows above using an insulated rail.
I use their IR sensors to trigger NJI  crossbucks. The setup uses between 4 or 6 IR sensors that are located between the ties of Gargraves track. With ballasting they are not in view. I forget the cost. But it involves a sensor board and IR Sensors. Nothing wrong with using a isolated rail as it’s certainly more economical. But if you run trains in both directions through the grade crossing. Their setup figures out which direction the train is running. The lights activate well before the train gets there and will turn off just after the last car passes. Just like real life. The only problem I see with an insulated rail. Is when running in both directions. The insulated rail must be close to the same distance on either side of the crossing to turn the lights on early enough. Doing this also requires them staying on way to long after the train passes. Sure. You can shorten the insulated rail so it doesn’t stay on for long. But it’s also activating way to late.

If you happen to be attending the Big E show. Pretty sure they have a booth. I purchased my setup there and they were very helpful getting what I needed and came with a great set of instructions.
