I have an MTH PS2 steam engine that was working fine until today with my MTH remote. Now I have lost control. (I charged the battery, so it is good.) The engine makes no noise, does not do either a Start Up or Shut Down. Instead, the speed knob will make it go forward (at an unusual speed) and stop, but it will not go in reverse or respond to any other commands. I called MTH Service and they had me try a Factory Reset on the remote, but as others have said it cannot be done with the remote for PS2.

First of all, I would like opinions on what is wrong and whether a Factory Reset is a possible solution. If so, they said I would need to mail it to them to do the fix. If it might be something else, I would appreciate ideas.

Also, is there anyone in southeast Michigan that can do a Factory Reset? Sending it to MTH takes too many weeks.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for responding to Gregg and Joe. My engine model is a 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado Steam 2-rail, MTH #20-3287-2. My remote is MTH DCS Remote Control. I use a DCS TIU.

I tried running direct, not through the TIU, and the engine does the same thing. It starts up with no noise, goes forward with the thumbwheel, but does not go into reverse, and continues with no sound. I tried a Factory Reset by deleting all engines from the remote, adding the 2-8-2, and then did the Factory Reset on the remote. After this step, the engine is eliminated automatically, so I used the menu and added it. It continues to operate the same way as described above. Is it time to send it back, or is there something else to try?

Norm,

I tried a Factory Reset by deleting all engines from the remote, adding the 2-8-2, and then did the Factory Reset on the remote. After this step, the engine is eliminated automatically, so I used the menu and added it. It continues to operate the same way as described above. Is it time to send it back, or is there something else to try?

Did you Factory Reset the engine or the remote? Regardless, deleting all engines from the remote wasn't necessary at all and didn't help. A Factory Reset for an engine goes like this:

  • Add the engine to the remote.
  • Press: Menu/Advanced/Reset Engine/Factory Reset
  • Scroll to and highlight the engine to be reset.
  • Press the thumbwheel to select it.
  • Press the thumbwheel again to confirm.

The engine will be deleted from the remote. Re-add it and see if things improve.

Then all that I can suggest is a conventional reset using the bell and whistle buttons.

From The DCS Companion 3rd Edition on page 173:

Ensure that the DCS engine is on a powered track and then press the horn button once followed by pressing the bell button 5 times. Each press should be 1/2 second in duration with 1/2 second pauses between button presses. If the reset is successful, the DCS engine will respond with two short blasts of its horn or whistle. The timing of button presses is important and it may take several attempts before the reset is successful.
