I have the MTH Veterans engine (same engine, different paint scheme), and haven't had any issues. I'm guessing you just got a bad unit.
Sent my unit back to MTH. I received an email saying unit had crimped wiring,a bare wire, and bad pcb. It runs fine now. Local hobby shops repairman said it ran fine,1.5hrs,in dcs, before i sent it to mth.Soo learned something.
I own two SD60E MTH locomotives one of which is the 911. Both have been running great.
I had an SD70 some years ago that had problems like you describe and my repair station said it was a bad heat sink and it was then repaired.
I had the same issue with the Railking 911 locomotive. Sent back once and it just did it again. Not very satisfied with MTH products at this point. Tried a different transformer with same issue. It starts ok, runs a few seconds and shuts down. Starts back up on its own and runs unusually fast then off again.
what's the item number of the engine?!

did you verify they ran the same speed before putting them together?
If they don't match up well, they fight each other.
30-20361-1e. It was running fine, normal then shut down on its own. Starts back up and runs unusually fast.

Are you running on DCS? If sounds like its cutting out and when it does, it loses the dcs signal, and take off at conventional speed. (Full voltage) You mentioned a pinched wire, it probably caused the short to cut out power for a second, then pick power back up and lose signal, causing it to rocket off.
I'm running in conventional mode with a Z1000 transformer and controller.
OK, I have to eat a little crow. Had a bad section of track, metered ok but the locomotive shut off at the same spot. Cleaned the connectors and track and it seems to work now. It fooled me as my Lionel locomotive ran fine on it. Caught it by rolling the lighted caboose around the track by itself.
