Found that the 30-1215-1 USRA switcher engine/tender harness was bad, so printed off the exploded view from MTH, but unfortunately it does not list harness PN#.  Any MTH repair technician have this PN so I can call MTH Monday with this number?

While I am at it, I thought I better order the tether for the 30-1163-1 Y6b engine, just in case.  That exploded diagram did list the harness number.

Hopefully both will be available in stock, else USRA is a shelf queen.

If MTH has a universal cable then the wiring code between engine and tender is standard, so I should be able to do a one to one wire swap, with no "funny" connections (orange wire now connected to blue or green and vice versa).

I remember reading that you could/should not switch tenders between different engine types, so assumed that the wiring scheme, colors and pinouts changed from engine to engine.  Fair assumption?  Of course no doubt the software firmware would be different for engines, making them incompatiable.

rrman;

The swap that you must avoid is between LocoSounds, PS1 and PS2.

I have swapped several PS2 tenders around with no ill effects.

I actually have an extra tender, got an engine off ebay, old conventional loco and PS2 tender, go figure that out. But hey, I have a spare set of PS2 boards if I need em.!

I keep saying that one day I'll upgrade an old engine with a DC motor and flywheel to mate with it.

You still have to be careful of swapping PS-2 Tenders. They are not all wired the same. Some Models have the PS-2 board in the locomotive shell and othersw have it in the tender. Some use mux boards and others don't. There are 3 volt systems and 5 volt systems. Interchanging any of these will cause problems or worse a blown board.

You stated you have a spare set of boards. If you have a 5 volt board I could use it. I have a 5 volt system steam engine that needs one. The 5 volt board does not come apart like the 3 volt system. There is also a 3 wire harness from the board to a plug where a voltage regulator plugs in. I have the regulators.

Thank you,

Forest

Never did get a reply from Midge at MTH.  Luckily I found a dealer in Dubuque Iowa who had these and sent two to me today which I will install on the USRA engine.  Have to see if he also will upgrade the TIU for me for nominal charge.  Yeah I know do it myself, but if software does not download correctly then I have a brain dead TIU and my layouts kaput until I buy a new TIU.

Agreed about Midge being an asset! She can take days to get back to you, but I've gotten part shipping emils on Sunday morning from her.

As to the harness, if you want to be certain, you can ohm it out using a very thin pin in each hole. I believe, MTH believes, it is universal, I'd hate to be the exception.

Diesel upgrades, like my NP ABBBA with two powered B units and the lead A powered, with a dummy trailing.  Will need some "Y" feeders and also passthrough from the trailing B to the trailing dummy A.

Not upgrading any steam; only have a Cab Forward in Proto and I understand that one is hairy to upgrade.

Also getting the Coal Turbine upgrade.
