Jumped into Standard Gauge tinplate with my first engine at York!  I resisted for a long time, and I have lots of O Gauge tinplate, but this MTH Ives 1134 caught my eye... and the rest is history.

So now, I look at the engine, and given that it's PS-1 my first priority before even powering it up is to change the white battery to a BCR or now NiMh 9V.

Looking underneath, I can see the white battery inside but I'm not sure how to get to it!  It seems like the way to get to the battery and electronics is from the top - by removing the shell.  I'm hoping that is the case, but not sure if I should just start removing screws from underneath or if there are specific screws that will get me to releasing the top shell and lifting it off.

A picture of a shell online I found might be helpful, but not sure.  I'm amazed that I haven't been able to find a YT video or a manual that would guide me through the process!

I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how to attack this project!

ps. When I got it, I saw the plug and harness on the tender so I figured that the electronics was in the tender.. easy to open.  To my surprise, when I opened the tender, there's nothing but a speaker in there!  Arrgghh!

I’ve done a dozen of these locos.  You have to remove the side rods, four screws securing the chassis, two between the drivers and two where the pivot to the drive rod is (near the steamchest).  But, the trick is you have to remove the two rear screws securing the firebox and spread them (you can’t get to the front screws with the drivers in the way) so the chassis can be lifted out.

Jon,

Thanks!  I think I get it...

shell1134

1) remove side rods

2) remove the screws as listed

location 1&2 between the drivers ?

location 4 near the steamchest?

location 3 remove the two rear screws securing the firebox and spread them ?

location 5 not removed?

Does my list sound right?

I've done a bunch of regular O gauge engine shells but this is a bit more stressful! I think your description makes sense to me...any other suggestions you may have are welcome!

Mallard4468,

The engine I have is from 2000.  It has a page on the MTH website, but the link to the manual connects to the PS2 version.,, (the wrong info).

I have the box and a manual that came with it, but they say "charge the battery", and that's it!

It's a nice engine but I'm hoping I can get a BCR in it and test it soon. (as I said, I'm not used the Std Gauge stuff yet)

Thanks!
