The smoke is controlled using the smoke on/off switch, it's under the trailing truck near the rear of the locomotive.  From all I find on that number, it's a conventional locomotive, so the remote is a non-issue.

GUNRUNNERJOHN,  This locomotive does not have a smoke switch under the cab.  The frame was made for one but there is no evidence that any was ever installed.  The seller said "...it has always smoked for me however I have a hand held remote (#1) and it would smoke".  Unfortunately for me, with an older model there is know way of knowing what has been modified or changed.  The electronics in the tender just has a sticker on assembly saying "Made in Thailand".  Here is a photo of the hand held.

Without knowing what you bought, it's pretty hard to provide useful information.  That model was a conventional model, and it had a smoke switch.  Don't know what you have now.

The 20-3019-1 is a 1996 PS-1 engine.  There should be a switch under the cab of the engine.  Look at both ends, there are holes in chassis with out switches on some engine and tenders from that era.

Did you prime the smoke unit with 10 drops or so of fluid?  Do you hear the fan running?  G

GGG, There is fluid in the smoker and the fan is not running.  There is NO switch under the cab although the frame has provisions for one.  As GUNRUNNERJOHN stated above this model has had the electronics changed and been modified to run on a hand-held.  I do not know what brand or type of electronics were installed.  I would suspect that the smoke unit is de-activated electronically and must be initiated electronically.  I am in contact with the seller presently.
