I just purchased a MTH K-4 MT 3019LP loco from an ebay seller.  In general, it is exactly as described although it does not smoke.  Follow-up with the seller stated that it was absolutely tested before shipping  (including smoking).  The only nuance is that the seller used a hand held controller and I am using a Lionel KW.  I have done all the things I know of.  Can this smoke unit be turned off electronically.  The frame location slot for the smoke On/Off switch does not have a switch (nor is there any evidence of any screws/switch ever being present).   The owner's manual is little help.

Another switch is under the rear tender truck.  In one position it seems to have two chuffs per revolution.  The other position four and the locomotive runs much smoother.  It this for "signal sounds" or "rail sounds" or what?  The manual does not even mention it.

Last issue.  The sound is fine except it increases in volume momentarily occasionally.  I was going to replace the battery but there is no battery.   I assume someone has put so sort of BCR in place.  Not knowing what the sound unit should look like I am a bit of a loss?

GUNRUNNERJOHN,  This locomotive does not have a smoke switch under the cab.  The frame was made for one but there is no evidence that any was ever installed.  The seller said "...it has always smoked for me however I have a hand held remote (#1) and it would smoke".  Unfortunately for me, with an older model there is know way of knowing what has been modified or changed.  The electronics in the tender just has a sticker on assembly saying "Made in Thailand".  Here is a photo of the hand held.

GGG, There is fluid in the smoker and the fan is not running.  There is NO switch under the cab although the frame has provisions for one.  As GUNRUNNERJOHN stated above this model has had the electronics changed and been modified to run on a hand-held.  I do not know what brand or type of electronics were installed.  I would suspect that the smoke unit is de-activated electronically and must be initiated electronically.  I am in contact with the seller presently.
