I have an MTH New York Central 4-6-4 Dreyfuss Steam Engine with Proto Sound 2. It is item # 20-3045-1. This engine, along with several other MTH engines, is being controlled by my MTH Digital Command System, and run very well. However, this particular engine does not respond to the Smoke on/off button on the remote controller. When you turn the smoke off, the smoke unit in the engine just keeps on working. A suggestion was made to me that the transistor that controls the smoke unit in the engine has gone bad. I am looking for opinions, replacement part numbers, diagrams and any suggestions that can be offered. Thanks very much.

How is your track signal level?
Track signal level is fine, all other MTH steam engines work fine, this one does not.
I would start with a feature reset ? Then a full reset ?
Thanks. That may be a good place to start. Appreciate your help.
This would mean both the heat element FET and the Smoke FAN Fet shorted which seems unlikely. Has this engine always done this? Is this engine originally yours or previously used? Maybe something wired different to smoke inside. I have seen weird work a rounds folks have done. G

Does the smoke PUFF at slow speeds? And when stopped does the smoke turn to a continuous stream?
Can you change the smoke level low-med-high and see a change in the smoke output?
The smoke comes in a continuous stream. When you change the smoke level there is no change in the output. The only way to stop the smoke is to turn it off with the switch on the bottom of the engine.
Need a picture of the inside and smoke unit. This sounds like a PS-1 smoke unit which is powered from the track voltage via the switch. I have seen folks who have blown the board, rewire the smoke to track or PV. So again is this a new phenomenon for your engine, or is this a used engine you bought? G
When in command-mode the smoke on-off switch on bottom of engine should do nothing. I'm with GGG on this one - I'd say the next step is to look under the hood.
I'm imagining a scenario where the smoke stopped working and, rather than repair the PS2 smoke electronics, someone re-wired the smoke heater/fan to bypass the PS2 electronics with only basic on-off control from the slide switch. Thus, the PS2 electronics has no control over smoke (no puffing, no lo-med-hi control).
Did you get this engine new and/or did the smoke ever work in your possession?
Thanks so much for your response and help. To answer your question, this is a used engine that I purchased.
Since you originally asked for replacement part numbers, diagrams, etc. it sounds like you're up for some DIY repair? Soldering will be involved.
If you can post some photos of the boiler unit with shell removed we can provide opinions on how to proceed.
Thank you very much. At this time, I cannot do that. I have a form of muscular dystrophy, so I require assistance with the handling and servicing of engines. My good friend who works with me, will probably not be available to sometime next week. Will re-post with pictures when I can.
