What a great day I always love the beginning of a New Year. That means my traditional purchase of a new engine. I cut down several years ago and only make one large purchase a year. This year I have my eyes on the MTH Pennsy 4-8-2 M1a. While my diesel engines are what I would call pretty much satisfied my steam locomotive is still being updated.

I currently have one TMCC, one PS2 and one PS3 locomotive. I don't count the conventional because they they run on the temp tracks during the year. I have been very happy with all three.

That gets me to my question.

Can anyone give me a review of this engine in some detail and maybe post a vid of it running?

I like it because it is affordable, in Pennsy and the overall size looks big with that tender. While this might be enough for most people to buy it I would like the nuts and bolts other than my superficial reasons for getting this one.

Thank you in advance.

Just to give a different view to SJC I bought a late PS2 version a year ago second hand. Apart from a minor problem with the tether it has run great. The sounds and smoke are excellent and the thing certainly looks huge with the coast to coast tender.

Obviously the PS3 comments don't apply but I can say that the finish on mine was pretty much flawless.

The only thing I have done to it is add a real coal load which has improved the look no end. I can't comment on the PS3 version but overall I am very pleased with the "look"

What exact problems did you have with the running gear? Can you explain in more detail?

What curves were you running or did the draw bar have problems on the straights too?

I don't get to concerned about the paint after all mine get used and they will get that used look after time. However with that said was all the paint peeling or just look like it was nicked?

What did they do to try and repair the train?

Thanks for your first hand report I appreciate it.

Note: If it means anything the dealer is suppose to have gotten this one back in stock on Tuesday does that make a difference?

I can't remember if they did the Imperial version in PS2 but I would assume it was done at least once. Regardless, I personally would hunt down a new or slightly used PS2 version with cable tether. If it isn't an Imperial version, you could easily add a coal load, darken the rods, add chains, marker lights, etc for a few extra bucks and come out with a solid little locomotive. Just my $0.02...
