Yes, comes up from the bottom into the connection point. The Square post goes into the drawbar, and they are telling you to push the spring rod on the drawbar (if it has one) so the post can go into the drawbar and the spring then touches the post to help create a chassis ground between engine and tender chassis.  G

The issue that I had with the big boy was actually with the packing.

It came with a black round 1/4 inch diameter rod between the side ladders.

I had to remove this rod so I could insert the draw bar.

The draw bar is still a pain in the butt mostly because you can't see underneath to insert it. 

Some of these engines best to lay on side on track on towel.  Connect, then transfer onto track.  G
