I'm an old American Flyer guy that just started getting into the new technology. I haven't bought the MTH WIFI controls yet, but like the look of the subject Diesel. Got it on EBAY as used but sat on display. It looks great! So I hooked it up to a Z-1000 and gave it some juice. After about 10 sec. the capacitors charge up and the diesel engine noise sequence starts. Then nothing put continuous noise. The Z-1000 direction button, horn, or bell has no effect on it. The Z-1000 works fine on my other non-DCC engine. I researched MTH cures (reducing voltage, etc.) but nothing works. Is the engine stuck in someone's previous program and it's waiting for a DCS command? I have the engine switch set to DCC. How do I ensure that I didn't purchase a lemon? Thanks.

Did you lower the voltage before trying the direction button?
Try lowering the handle to get the engine out of neutral. I would also recommend that you do a reset so it unlocks the engine.
I tried to lower the voltage. I also tried to do a reset with the buttons, but the buttons have no effect. They also don't make the bell or horn sound on the subject engine.
Sounds like you need to take the engine to someone for testing. You may have some issue with your power source?
Did you try this with the switch set to DCS?
There is a second switch on the engine that offers DCC vs DCS, I would put it in DCS setting. The DCC maybe causing the engine go look for DCC commands which you are not giving it.
No need to lower voltage for a PS-3 engine. So no bell or whistle? The manual has instructions for a conventional reset. You can try that. You could take to some one with DCS to let them load it and do a factory reset with DCS? If neither work, could be defective board, but before that having some one reload the sound file and flash code.
No bell or whistle is concerning when you have sounds. Motion could be a simple unlock from neutral. Otherwise return to the seller. G

Yeah, you're gonna want to throw that switch over to DCS...there's no "conventional mode" under DCC

I did finally switch to DCS mode and was finally able to do a H,B,B,B,B,B factory reset. It started to somewhat behave. I found it having a hard time making the Bell ring. After a while it started to run as designed. So next I primed the smoke stack to see if that would work. After I turned on smoke, it started smoking out the fake cooling fans instead of the stack. After watching it for about ten minutes, turning it off and on as well, I took off the access cover and blew into and toward the smoker. Bam, it's starts smoking out of the stack. I'm not going to investigate any further, just going to count my blessings and carryon.
I cannot believe how quick and helpful you guys are. I can't wait to get further into this game and tap you guys again. Thanks!
