I was at the AGHR club today running my Veranda PS3 I had purchased within the last year. I am very disappointed with the smoke output of it. Although it is a handsome engine, a great puller (4 motors) and very detailed, I am considering selling it. Why? The forward smoke unit was not designed correctly and only smoked through a small port. The original PS1 Veranda was done correctly and smoked profusely through the forward exhaust grate. The rear/aft exhaust is not smoking well either. I am not too concerned about the aft/rear smoke unit. I can change the wick out. I have seen that before. What I am concerned about is the forward smoke unit. I installed the retrofit kit from MTH and the smoke still sucks. The smoke if very diffused. No way to get smoke fluid into the smoke unit effectively. I glued the little cap in place over the old smoke unit port. Otherwise, it will be lost very soon. The original unit was not designed this way. Before I put it up for sale on the buy/sell/trade board I want to know if there is anybody out there who has the skills to straighten the forward smoke unit out? Like a more powerful fan. And a more efficient way to add smoke fluid other than putting it through the grates? Any ideas? Any volunteers to tackle the project? I am willing to reimburse anyone who has any ideas and knows how to implement. Otherwise, its off to the buy/sell board. Please advise.

ptalar,
Try emailing Gunrunnerjohn or Alex M. Their emails are on their profiles. Gunrunner works on both MTH & Lionel. Alex does mostly Lionel but he may of done some MTH as well.
Both are smoke masters

If I remember correctly, there's an issue with miss-designed baffle of sorts. MTH has designed a part to fix the problem and is a matter of swapping out a part or two. Give MTH a call before giving-up and selling it off. I believe Eric Segal covered this in his review of this engine, you may wish to check his website
Marty Fitzhennry is also a master with repairs especially MTH. How could I of forgotten him!!!

I seem to remember a recall being issued by MTH for the Veranda in regards to the smoke unit? Try searching the forum and/or calling MTH for details and further info. They offered a kit for you to install or your dealer to install.
mth has a repair kit for it
