So a few month back I got this "deal" from a fellow forum member. It came to me as you will see soon enough. That is now in the past and now it's time to take on this surprise project.

I have decided to take the engine completely apart and fix any issues I come across as everything goes back together. The Tender has the most damage and as a result is the most pressing for me to get back to new condition.

Here is what I have done this far:

So I now come to you friends for some advice. As you can see, it seems as if the original battery blew up in this tender. It caused a fair amount of rust on the Tenders Frame as well as the shell which I am not sure how unless it happened in it's box while in storage on its side.

The question is, what is the best method to clean the white battery acid off of the shell? Once it's clean I will repaint it a bit to stop future rust from forming. This is more of a precaution more than a need.

The next question is about the frame. Any special paint you all know of to match the OEM look as close as possible? As you can see one of the trucks is affected as well so I have to paint them all so they all look the same.

For now that is all I need so that I can get this Tender back to it's original glory.

I will keep the engine for after the Tender is done. It has it's own challenges but I will keep you all on your toes to see that beautiful mess.

Thanks everyone!

P.s. I might try and fab up a speaker housing to make the sound a bit better as well 😉

If you do repaint - Scalecoat II Black  (it is naturally glossy enough that you can apply decals with no issues).  Do a custom mix of 50% dullcote / 50% clearcote as a top coat to match the OEM paint on the engine.

EDIT:  I was referring to the shell.  You can also use scalecoat II on the frame - Engine black is a semi-gloss finish.

Maybe just baking soda and water?

I have a ton of baking soda for some reason I can't recall lol I think it's a great idea.

Thank you Joe!

This is exactly what I needed. Thankfully the damage barely made it's way to the outside of the engine so it's really just the frame and the sides of the trucks I need to paint. The inside of the Tender shell will get the same as it doesn't matter.

Thank you friend!

Well, that took long enough! After over 3 years on a shelf, she is back to life in all her glory.

I am looking for a suggestion on replacing the thin wire that ties the bell and whistle into the cab (it's not an actual wire, purely aesthetic).

Also, I am being critical of myself but the paint I chose ended up being a bit on the glossy side, I hope to weather this a bit so that's no concern of mine at the moment, honestly just happy to see her running again.

Some of the videos may seem pointless but it's my way of remembering where certain screws go LMAO I might not be the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree but I still shine!

I bought this from the legendary Barry Broskowitz on 11/14/2018, just months before his unfortunate passing, although I did not like the engine's condition when I received it he, unbeknownst to the both of us, gave me the opportunity to learn and fix this beauty and I hope I was able to make you proud and Thank You Barry!
