After the upgrade I did on my Lionel Southern 4501 Mikado, I've found it more fun and less expensive to buy older locomotives at bargain prices that I could upgrade to Command Control.  For me, it's just economically better than spending high dollar and creating a bigger carbon footprint for a new Legacy/Proto3 engine, especially when I'm a middle class college student.

The next project will probably be the MTH Empire State Express Hudson from 1995.

Though I want to ask, did this specific engine come with the older Seuthe smoke unit or the MTH fan driven smoke unit?

If it's the latter, it would make upgrades like the Super Chuffer much easier to add on.

If this is the Premier version it came with fan driven smoke. Great engine. I upgraded mine to PS2 3V. Its on the workbench for a straight tether, deck apron, and lubricator linkage.

BTW upgrading to DCS rather than TMCC obviates the need for chuff/smoke enhancements or added tender rollers and correct passenger announcements are part of the sound upgrade package. No need for a SS Diner.

I have this very engine.  It's my only PS1 engine.  I'd be very interested in detailed photos from the upgrade, particularly if you make it a PS3.  That's really what I'd like to do with mine.  I have way more TMCC stuff, but I'm wanting to finally get DCS on the layout for the PS2 I already have.  So it would be nice to make my ESE a PS3 engine as well.

You can't make it a pure PS-3 without gutting another engine, but you can use MTH PS-32 Steam upgrade kit and do the upgrade.  Pretty straight forward.  G

Is there a difference between the PS-3 and the PS-2 steam upgrade kits, or is just old stock and current stock sort of thing?  I just put a NOS crane commander into my 2001 282R gantry crane.  So I'm feeling a bit adventurous in the upgrade department.

An old PS-2 kit is a 3V board and will work fine.  Needs a Battery or BCR and uses 3V sound files and uses bulbs.

A new PS-3 steam kit is a PS-32 board, which is a PS-3 modified diesel board with an adapter for driving bulbs. Everything else in the kit is the same, except no battery.  The advantage of this kit is you can use PS-3 Sound Files (DO NOT use the PS-3 Flash file, only sound file), no battery, has supercaps, still uses bulbs.   G

Thanks for the output, guys.

I was considering going for ERR Cruise and RailSounds 4 or 5 for this engine.

As much as I like Proto 2 and 3 (and trust me, I have quite a lot of PS2 and 3 engines in my roster), my (as well as my friends in NJ) experience with these upgrade kits have not been...pleasant. I do know Proto 3 kits are available that could work well, but if something goes wrong and a board or something blows, it will more likely than not take a long time to get a replacement.

That's what happened when I tried to upgrade a Proto 1 Blue Comet...the less said about that the better.

Plus, I've never liked the whistle sound in the MTH O gauge Empire State sound files. If they did the one in their HO ESE's, then that would be great.

Again, it'll be my engine, and I'll decide what to do with it when I get it, after all.
