Bought a MTH AS-616 a few years ago. Tore apart for custom project. It had a BCR in it, which I ended up robbing for another engine, since sold. Well had a little tussle with cancer........ yada yada yada........ and now finally put engine back together. Didn't have a new rechargeable or BCR so I popped in a fresh 9v. Sounds but will not move........... Was having issues with the controller. Fixed that today and re tested engine...... Same no movement...... Took out battery and checked volts.... all good. And I don't know why I tried engine with no battery...... works fine. Sound, movement, direction change, horn, bell............ I thought these things fragged themselves on low volts............ I am at a loss............ WTF??????

DO a factory reset, but if you can't get pass reset 1 there is ID conflict and board needs to be reset with chip only techs have. G
Wouldn't hurt to try another battery....What controller are you using?
Did you first try it at any time with an old battery?
Didn't have an old battery. I knew you could use std 9v temp. so that's what I had. Also checked battery to make sure it was good.
Controller is MTH Z750. I'm leary to attempt a reset. As long as it work's leave it alone. Was mostly currious as to how it would work with no battery. I can see it now, attempt rest, or get it to reset and then it won't work at all. It's put up now. Do not have room for a layout anymore. Just some trains under tree or throw some track on floor for grandkids. I've got a diesel sound board, and a std electronic rev board so if it croaks........ it croaks.
I know you've put things aside for the time being but there's another thread that's very similar which kind of makes sense..
The battery leads may be reversed. ( no battery no short)
