Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a recently acquired MTH Premier N&W J-Class with PS3 and steaming whistle (item number 20-3773-1 from 2020).  The engine runs fine normally, but whenever I turn the smoke unit on, the headlight and marker LEDs dim slightly and they flicker/pulsate at low speed in time with the chuffs.  At higher speeds, once the fan motor is steady, the LEDs return to their slightly dimmed but steady state. Turning on and blowing the steaming whistle does not have the same effect on the lights.

I've read in other older posts about the possibility of the fan motor having a problem.  How would one go about testing it?  Fwiw, I have checked the resistance of the stack smoke motor (about 11 ohms) and compared it to the whistle steam motor (also about 11 ohms), if that says anything.

I also have a 20-3406-1 SNCF 241a locomotive from 2012 that has the same issue but to a far lesser extent.

Thanks in advance to the DCS gurus out there!

Don't waste your time.  Unplug smoke motor.  Does symptom go away?  If so replace the fan motor.  Many times they will show a lower ohm when causing issues, but not all the time.

Beware on that 241a.  I just fixed one that was internally wired wrong.  Horrible operation.  The had drawbar 5V and data wires go into the PS-3 30 pin vice 8 pin.  Also had to shorten motor leads.  G

Well I bench tested the main motor and it seems to be fine but I'll go ahead and swap another in and see how it goes...

Really?  How would I know if mine was screwed up?  It has always run perfectly except for a tiny bit of headlight dimming with chuffing at low speeds like the 611 but much less pronounced.
