I have an MTH Missouri Pacific Alco PA A-B-A set (part number: 20-2388-1) from 2002. The locomotives run fine, but the sound no longer works (due, I think, to a Star speaker whose chrome plating flaked off and ended up where it should not have been).
The local train shop said that the way to repair this was to remove all of the original Proto-2 5 volt electronics, including the slave board in the 2nd A unit, and install two PS-3 Upgrade kits (one in each A-Unit) and run the A-B-A set as a lashup). This would be quite expensive.
I ran across this page on the MTH Parts Website when searching for parts for this locomotive:

To my uneducated eye, item #32 appears to be a PS-3 replacement board that will work with the original Slave board in the 2nd A unit-is this correct?
Would this allow me to continue to use the locomotive set with the existing cables and slave board in the 2nd A-unit?
Would any additional parts be required?
I have exactly 1 PS-3 Steam upgrade kit under my belt (with another one on the way). Is this something that someone with limited experience with this sort of thing could do?
Also, someone who did a YouTube video about PS-3 upgrades stated that the PS-3 upgrade boards would support two smoke units-is this correct? I would like to put smoke in the B-Unit as it always looked strange to me that only the two A-Units smoked.
Thank you.
