I have an MTH Missouri Pacific Alco PA A-B-A set (part number: 20-2388-1) from 2002.  The locomotives run fine, but the sound no longer works (due, I think, to a Star speaker whose chrome plating flaked off and ended up where it should not have been).

The local train shop said that the way to repair this was to remove all of the original Proto-2 5 volt electronics, including the slave board in the 2nd A unit, and install two PS-3 Upgrade kits (one in each A-Unit) and run the A-B-A set as a lashup).  This would be quite expensive.

I ran across this page on the MTH Parts Website when searching for parts for this locomotive:

https://www.mthpartsandsales.c...lists/112?type=lists

To my uneducated eye, item #32 appears to be a PS-3 replacement board that will work with the original Slave board in the 2nd A unit-is this correct?

Would this allow me to continue to use the locomotive set with the existing cables and slave board in the 2nd A-unit?

Would any additional parts be required?

I have exactly 1 PS-3 Steam upgrade kit under my belt (with another one on the way).  Is this something that someone with limited experience with this sort of thing could do?

Also, someone who did a YouTube video about PS-3 upgrades stated that the PS-3 upgrade boards would support two smoke units-is this correct?  I would like to put smoke in the B-Unit as it always looked strange to me that only the two A-Units smoked.

Thank you.

One other approach I have been considering has been to remove the slave board from the 2nd A Unit and install the PS-3 upgrade in that.  I would leave the existing PS-2 board in the lead unit and run the two as a lashup.  The sound would be coming out of the 2nd A-Unit as opposed to the lead A-Unit.  This approach assumes that the speed control in the PS-2 equipped unit and the PS-3 equipped unit would be close enough to allow them to run together without fighting each other.

Anyone have any thoughts on this approach?

Your local train shop is not giving you the straight scoop.  First off, you could use just one PS32 replacement board and the existing slave board and be on your way.  The PS32 board is compatible with the existing slave board.

However, that's still a $200 repair, and since it's only the audio that is out, replacing the audio amplifier on the PS/2 board would be cheaper.  The TDA7056A audio amp part is still available.  In this situation, that's the first thing I try.

gunrunnerjohn,

I didn't know that the amplifier was replaceable!  I will look into that first!  UPDATE:  I just found the amp you referred to on Amazon-10 of them for just over $13.00!  I would NEVER have known about that if not for your post!

I would still like to know, as I already have the PS-3 upgrade, how/where is the cable for the slave board connected to the PS-3 upgrade board.

Thank you very much for the information sir.
