Ok, why do my MTH PS2 starter set engines from 2001 to 2005 run much better than my Scale premium PS2 engines?

The starter sets run slower, smoother, quieter, and just plain old better than my scale engines of the same era. They even run better than the newer ones including a few PS3 engines. Now this is a conventional operation comparison. Run the starter set engines light or with more cars than they should be pulling and everywhere in-between they just out perform my scale engines. I am running Realtrax track 072’ turns and 072 Realtrax switches with a Z4000 transformer. I have center rail power and side rail power every three feet and outside rails tied together.

The starter engines run perfectly consistent but the scale engines will slow and speed up at the same switches or areas that the starter engines ran through perfectly and with the same consist in tow. The premium engines will not run as slow either and when asked to run slow they will sometimes stall on the switches. I don’t think it could be maintenance as they are all maintained at the same time and using the same procedures. I notice these conditions with freshly hand cleaned track as well as run in used track.

What are you thoughts on this subject?

Thank you for your time.

I run DCS PS 2.0 and PS 3.0 exclusively, and I notice that some engines run better than others. Generally, high mileage steamers run better than low mileage engines, especially at low speeds.

PS 2.0 underwent design evolutions of 9V, 5V and 3V electronics. I do not see any significant differences in operation. Moreover, I do not see any running improvements between PS 2.0 and PS 3.0. Functionally, PS 3.0 does not have a battery.

I've only fooled with a couple of PS/3 locomotives, haven't added any to the stable at of now.  I don't see any significant differences in operation of the PS/2 and PS/3 versions, or any difference in the 5V vs. 3V PS/2 models.  Truthfully, in looking at the PS/3 drawbar, I was not that impressed, that just looks like trouble in the making!  I can't imagine that being more reliable than the tether, and I can imagine it being less reliable!

The lack of a battery in the PS/3 engines is a plus, but a BCR solves that issue for PS/2.

If a PS/3 upgrade kit comes out, and the boards are small enough for smaller motorized units, that would be a big plus for PS/3 IMO.  I would like the option of better sound than you can get with the TMCC upgrades, and the PS/2 board sets are too big for most small motorized units.
